Nunes letter to Schiff: ‘As part of your rehabilitation, it’s crucial that you admit you have a problem’

Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, is riding high following last week’s release of the Justice Department Inspector General report on FBI abuse of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

In a letter Sunday, Nunes told committee chairman Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., that he’s “in need of rehabilitation,” given the report’s findings, according to Fox News.

Taking considerable heat in the media after voicing concerns about the FBI’s reliance on the discredited Christopher Steele dossier funded by Hillary Clinton’s campaign to obtain a FISA warrant to surveil former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, Nunes was vindicated by the IG report.

The IG report found the bureau’s FISA warrant applications included 17 “significant errors and omissions,” including an email doctored to make Page appear as a Russian spy, and that information from the unverified dossier was key to convincing the FISA court to approve the warrants.

Schiff dismissed Nunes’ concerns in a 2018 memo, as national reporters and other media figures insisted at the time that the dossier had little to do with obtaining the warrants.

In what is known as the Nunes Memo, which is dated January 18, 2018, the then-chairman of the panel wrote:

“Our findings, which are detailed below, 1) raise concerns with the legitimacy and legality of certain DOJ and FBI interactions with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), and 2) represent a troubling breakdown of legal processes established to protect the American people from abuses related to the FISA process.”

The media cited anonymous sourced to report the FBI had “grave concerns” about the memo.

The current chairman, who led the Democratic Party’s partisan impeachment effort, denied any wrongdoing by the FBI and claimed that the DOJ “made only narrow use of information from Steele’s sources” for the Page warrant, Fox News reported.

He said, “FBI and DOJ officials did not ‘abuse’ the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) process, omit material information, or subvert this vital tool to spy on the Trump campaign.”

“After publishing false conclusions of such enormity on a topic directly within this committee’s oversight responsibilities, it is clear you are in need of rehabilitation, and I hope this letter will serve as the first step in that vital process,” Nunes wrote in his letter.

The Republican lawmaker said Schiff used the Intel committee “as a launching pad to impeach the president for issues that have no intelligence component at all.”

“As part of your rehabilitation, it’s crucial that you admit you have a problem,” Nunes added.

Nunes also called on Schiff to have DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz to come before their committee “at the nearest opportunity.”

The inspector general testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week and Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., methodically questioned Horowitz on the glaring, sustained misconduct by the FBI.
