Pelosi brags ‘we ate their lunch’ on USMCA spin; Trump spits it back at her

In what was referred to as “ludicrous optics,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and her Democratic cabal of conspirators announced an agreement with the Trump White House on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), an hour or so after announcing articles of impeachment against the president.

And while it could be argued that Pelosi and Co. must think the American people are stupid, the party’s media allies did their part to carry the water in helping Democrats control the narrative, while boosting the speaker’s image.

Reporting on a closed-door meeting Tuesday — this becoming a regular occurrence for the party of transparency — the Washington Post regaled readers with how Pelosi told other House Democrats that “we ate their lunch.”

This being in reference to changes the White House agreed to on USMCA to forge an agreement.

To support Pelosi’s contention, the Post reported on “frustrations” from Sen. Patrick Toomey, R-Pa., about provisions of the new trade agreement, reporting that he said the administration had given too many concessions at the expense of Republican priorities.

Toomey was quoted saying “there was a lot of discussion early on. But in the last few weeks, the discussion certainly didn’t include me.” He said the negotiations “seemed to be a, you know, just a one-way direction in the direction of the Democrats.”

Both sides declared victory in reaching an agreement, even if Pelosi did sit on the deal for months on end.

“There is no question of course that this trade agreement is much better than NAFTA, but in terms of our work here, it is infinitely better than what was initially proposed by the administration,” Pelosi said Tuesday at a hastily called news conference.

Trump spoke about the agreement at a rally Tuesday night in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and expanded on the timing.

“Congress will soon vote on my new trade deal after years of waiting,” Trump told the crowd. “We’ve been waiting for a long time for Nancy Pelosi to announce USMCA and she did it on the same day that they announced that they are going to impeach the 45th president of the United States — and your favorite president, I think.”

The president said the reason it was done the same day was that “it plays down the impeachment.”

“They’re embarrassed by the impeachment and our poll numbers have gone through the roof because of her stupid impeachment,” Trump explained. “The silver lining of impeachment and this witch hunt, that’s the reason they approved USMCA and that’s okay with me because they approved it and they are very happy to have it.”

With a floor vote on impeachment expected next week, expect more gamesmanship from Speaker Pelosi, as she’ll likely push for a vote on USMCA around the same time.

And with the AFL-CIO endorsing the deal, Senate Republicans may take issue with supporting USMCA, should it pass in the House.

“If they got the unions, my assumption is there are going to be a lot of things that were changed from the last time that we’ve seen anything on this,” Majority Whip John Thune, R-S.D., told the Post.

Either way, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said on Tuesday the trade deal “will have to come up, in all likelihood, after the [impeachment] trial is finished in the Senate.”

“We will not be doing USMCA in the Senate between now and next week,” McConnell told reporters.
