Sheer brilliance! Actor Ryan Reynolds taps ‘Peloton wife’ to sell his gin brand in snarky spoof ad

“Great Execution is the Ultimate Differentiator.” – Margaret Molloy

In a move nothing short of brilliant, actor Ryan Reynolds pulled off super-savvy hijacking of the Peloton company’s recent trainwreck and turned it into a marketing plus. Kudos!

After the exercise bike commercial went viral for all the wrong reasons, the actors starring in “The Gift That Gives Back” ad worried about their futures.

Luckily for Monica Ruiz, aka “Peloton wife,” Reynolds wasn’t slurping up the faux outrage that liberals were trying to sell. In fact, he even went as far as to make a cheeky commercial for his own gin brand that starred Ruiz and threw a series of jabs at the whole mess.

Aviation American Gin posted the ad to their Instagram account, sparking a deluge of mostly positive comments from people who were clearly in on the joke:

This Holiday…Gift Responsibly.

The ad starts out with Ruiz sitting at a bar with her friends, staring into the camera as if she had just experienced a traumatic event. Her friends appear to try to come up with some sort of way to engage her, when Ruiz says: “This gin is really smooth.” The ladies flanking her agree and offer to get her another drink. One of them even says: “You’re safe here,” which jokingly refers to the ad and its crazy controversy.

The trio raises their glasses “to new beginnings” and while her friends sip their drinks, Ruiz chugs hers. “This is gonna be a fun night,” remarks one of her companions, watching the woman scarf down the alcoholic beverage before offering her own.

Ryan Reynolds tweeted the ad with the caption “Exercise bike not included” in a humorous nod at the bike blowout and at the time of this posting, the video had upwards of 5.2 million views. Apparently, people aren’t buying the outrage this holiday season.

While Reynolds turned Peloton’s pain into Aviation American Gin’s gain, the other actor involved in the controversial Christmas spot is similarly worried that the outcry might affect him off the screen.

BizPac Review reported on Friday that Sean Hunter, aka “Peloton husband,” is worried that his portrayal in the ad might negatively impact his teaching career.

“My 5 seconds of air time created an array of malicious feedback that is all associated with my face,” he said. “My friend texted me today declaring that I’m ‘a symbol of the patriarchy.’”

“I pride myself on being a great teacher and developing actor, and I can only hope that this affects neither,” Hunter said. “I’m grappling with the negative opinions as none of them have been constructively helpful.”

Hunter is worried that the ad will cause his students to see him differently, or will follow him to other acting gigs.

“After all, this commercial has nothing to do with my ability to teach or who I am,” he noted. “Unfortunately, the problem is that viewers can mistake an actor as that person after they’ve seen them on television instead of a person given a script with no opinion on what they are being told to portray.”

Here’s hoping he has as awesome a comeback as his co-star Monica.
