Self-avowed socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., declared at a town hall she never wants to hear the term “free stuff” again in reference to giveaways from her party.
Conservative pundit Mark Steyn appeared Tuesday on “Fox & Friends to break down Ocasio-Cortez’s quest to transform America.
The freshman Democrat may be seen as a dimwit in the eyes of many, but she’s smart enough to know that he who controls language controls the narrative, as she demands “free stuff” to evermore be referred to a “public goods” — which has a very communal feel to it, even it if there’s little emphasis on who’s paying for the goods.
“It’s not that we deserve it because it’s a handout. People like to say, ‘Oh, this is about free stuff.’ This is not about free stuff,” Ocasio-Cortez said over the weekend at a town hall in the Bronx.
“These are public goods. They’re public goods. So I never want to hear the word or the term ‘free stuff’ ever again,” she added. “Because I’m tired of already hearing some of these neoliberal folks who are trying to like, flip the script on us.”
The remark was aimed more at Democrats who support moderate candidates like former Vice President Joe Biden or former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg — Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed fellow socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders for president.
“God bless her, she’s actually more effective,” Steyn observed. “You can see why they are not as enthusiastic about Joe Biden and Mike Bloomberg after seeing her. What I love about her, by free stuff, she is — essentially she wants everybody on the planet to be able to come here. So that’s free borders and free health care and free college.”
“She wants 7 billion people essentially to be able to enjoy what in the 19th century would be the life of a younger son of a middle European grand duke — at the cost to the U.S. Taxpayer.”
Yet she doesn’t want you to call that “free stuff.”
“God bless her,” Steyn said. “This is where all the energy and charisma and talent is in the Democrat Party. Because the moderate wing, both with Hillary [Clinton] and with the Bidens is in the hands of these corrupt kleptocrats.”
Co-host Steve Doocy chimed in to say Sanders is lucky that she is in his camp.
“She had a rally with him here in New York City and 25,000 people showed up,” he noted.
Steyn countered to say “Bernie has lost a step or two since four years ago,” summing up the consequences of embracing policies being pushed by the likes of Sanders and his Bronx sidekick.
“It is free stuff as long as you give all your money to the government,” he concluded.
