The Democratic campaign to demonize American businesses

Like Diogenes wandering the streets of ancient Greece, lantern in hand, searching for an honest man, business leaders in America are searching the Democratic presidential candidates, looking for someone who speaks truth and is not openly hostile to business. At the moment, most of the candidates have backgrounds as lawyers, academics and political agitators.  None of them seem to understand that businesses large and small are the economic engine that drives quality of life in our communities. But most of the Dem candidates, to the contrary, seem to claim our businesses and corporations are “wrecking the country”. None of the leading candidates has ever run a business or managed a complex enterprise. So, business leaders are facing a Democratic Party that has inserted an anti-corporation plank in their platform.

None of the Dem presidential candidates have any good words about businesses except John Delaney and, occasionally, Michael Bennet. Most of them think corporations are only good for one thing—tax revenue. So, they made a bogeyman out of businesses, with “one candidate after another claim(ing) corporations were wrecking the economy”. In the past, Democrats attempted to conceal their arrogant contempt for private businesses, but not the current crop.

It used to be that Dem candidates at the national level campaigned to redistribute the wealth produced by American capitalism, but stopped short of criticizing capitalism itself.  No more. Now, we see the Democratic Party in a hard swerve to the left. It can no longer hide its anti-business bias and its abandonment of fiscal responsibility.  We hear many presidential aspirants talk passionately of “remaking capitalism from the ground up”. They scorn successful business people and give them no credit for creating jobs; they only praise economic growth when it’s propelled by government programs.

The Dems want to monitor and regulate anything that moves in the corporate world, and to break up big technology companies. They seek to block oil pipelines and fossil-fuel companies, impose minimum wages, limit right-to-work laws, abolish private health insurance (for 165 million Americans) and stop energy development. They are moreso pushing gender/race/class warfare and social experimenting than taking action to promote serious economic growth. Dems welcome with open arms a whole slew of activists who are usually adversaries or enemies of business: unions, extreme environmentalists, consumers, personal injury and plaintiff trial lawyers, mainstream media, government workers, academia, Hollywood glitterati, some minorities, artists, socialists, anti-growthers, university professors.

Most of the Dem presidential candidates do not want a highly profitable business environment. To them, profit is evil, capitalism is oppressive, shareholders are greedy money grubbers. Instead of earning more profits, they say, businesses must increase wages, install deluxe health care plans and child daycare, set up robust retirement pensions, give more vacation time, expand maternity leave.

Finally, the Dem Party wants to push all kinds of “safe space” restrictions and regulations on every business in the country, costly burdens like global climate standards, gender neutral bathrooms, diversity mandates and quotas, regulations that permit plaintiff trial attorneys and unions to siphon money from business coffers. The Dems want to pile on shelf loads of new laws, because more laws increase the chances that companies and CEOs will unknowingly break laws and must pay fines, which go to fund more liberal “free stuff” programs.

Perhaps the worst, the grimmest, of the Dem lot is Liz Warren, the candidate who uses open hostility as a political tactic, and who wallows in the politics of envy. She claims that corporations are “disloyal” to all of the following: America, American workers, American consumers and American communities.  She relegates companies to acting as the devil incarnate in American society. Her solution to all problems is to put lipstick on the government pig and Give the Federal Government More Power. Yikes.

The net result of all this radical activity is that liberals like Liz, Bernie and Joe would make the Obama years look like the good old days. They would unleash the federal government to tweak and refine every nook and cranny of American life, shift the nation away from free markets and free enterprise, and squeeze every last dollar from the pockets of every successful American, for taxes.
