A State Department report indicates that investigators found almost 600 security incidents arising out of Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server between 2009 and 2013. The report noted 38 people were “culpable,” and involved in 91 cases of sending classified information that were found in Clinton’s personal email.
The investigation, launched more than three years ago, examined 33,000 emails that Clinton turned over for review. A total of 588 violations were found involving information that was at the time or has since been classified, however, in 497 cases, blame could not be assigned.
The 38 culpable individuals were not identified, but they include current and former State Department officials. According to the AP, “culpability means the violations will be noted in their files and will be considered when they apply for or go to renew security clearances. For current officials, there could also be some kind of disciplinary action. But it was not immediately clear what that would be.”
Unsurprisingly, liberal news outlets are focusing on the report stating that there was “no persuasive evidence of systemic, deliberate mishandling of classified information.”
Investigators concluded “that the use of a private email system to conduct official business added an increased degree of risk of compromise as a private system lacks the network monitoring and intrusion detection capabilities of State Department networks.
“While the use of a private email system itself did not necessarily increase the likelihood of classified information being transmitted on unclassified systems, those incidents which then resulted in the presence of classified information upon it carried an increased risk of compromise or inadvertent disclosure,” the report said.
In 2015, conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch broke the news that Clinton was irresponsibly using a woefully insecure private email system to conduct official business during the time she was Obama’s Secretary of State.
The FBI began investigating the emails in 2015 but FBI Director James Comey announced in July 2016, in the midst of the presidential campaign season, that the agency would not recommend charges, in spite of Clinton as having been “extremely careless” in her conduct. At the time, the FBI found that some emails that they examined included Top Secret information.
Of course, the State Department report notes that the review did not include “emails deleted by Ms. Clinton after her lawyers advised that they were private and not related to official business.”
In March 2015, Rep. Trey Gowdy Chair of the House Benghazi Committee, issued the following statement regarding former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s response to the committee’s subpoena to turn over her server to an independent third party for review:
“After seeking and receiving a two week extension from the Committee, Secretary Clinton failed to provide a single new document to the subpoena issued by the Committee and refused to provide her private server to the Inspector General for the State Department or any other independent arbiter for analysis.
“We learned today, from her attorney, Secretary Clinton unilaterally decided to wipe her server clean and permanently delete all emails from her personal server. While it is not clear precisely when Secretary Clinton decided to permanently delete all emails from her server, it appears she made the decision after October 28, 2014, when the Department of State for the first time asked the Secretary to return her public record to the Department.”
Reports have indicated that upwards of 30,000 emails were deleted using BleachBit and multiple BlackBerrys were destroyed, after being under congressional subpoena.
