Former tennis star Martina Navratilova was slammed after a disrespectful attack on a World War II veteran highlighted by U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell.
The ambassador fired back at the 62-year-old tennis legend, advising her to “seek help” after she turned a touching moment he shared with the 95-year-old veteran into an opportunity to attack President Trump.
Grenell and his longtime partner Matt Lashey were in Normandy over the weekend and the emotional moment was captured in photos he shared on Twitter. Grenell noted that the hero grandfather recounted his experiences as he returned to where he fought the Nazis as a 19-year-old soldier in World War II.
In Normandy, where a hero Grandfather tells his grandson what it was like to be a 19 yr old Ohio teenager arriving in France to fight the Nazis. @mattlashey and Merle Lashey are lucky. So many buried here never got to have a family. #sacrifice #freedomisntfree pic.twitter.com/XBtQ8ZnuY0

And while many poured out emotional sentiments on Twitter in response, thanking the veteran for his service and Grenell for being there, Navratilova immediately reacted with a left-wing rant against the ambassador.
“You tweet this while our troops are under fire thanks to your guy Trump? Have you any idea about what is going on in Syria now? #crickets,” she tweeted.
You tweet this while our troops are under fire thanks to your guy trump? Have you any idea about what is going on in Syria now? #crickets

But Grenell fired back at her insensitive need to “ridicule” the moment.
My 95 yr old grandfather visits Normandy for the first time after he landed there as a 19 yr old teenager and you ridicule his moment? Seek help immediately! You have #TrumpDerangementSyndrome #greatestgeneration

The unhinged liberal fired off another round, however, accusing Grenell of being “ok with the slaughter of civilians in Syria.”
Think about the timing. I am not the sick one here- I thank your grandfather for fighting for our country. Same cannot be said for you. But I guess you’re ok with the slaughter of civilians in Syria thanks to your guy… ?#Impeach45

Another Twitter user interjected to call out the “deranged lunatic” and tell her to stop “politicizing” veterans.
It’s never inappropriate to honor the American heroes that stormed Omaha Beach. Stop politicizing those that sacrificed for our country and the world, you deranged lunatic. #seekhelp

But the former professional tennis player had plenty of vitriol to go around and slammed this critic’s remarks as well.
Your opinion is one thing, calling me names is another, mansplainer. I have no idea who the f you are and don’t care to find out- bye bye now:)
— Martina Navratilova (@Martina) October 13, 2019
Grenell eventually gave Navratilova a brutal reality check that seemed to end the tirade.
You started out by calling people names. Are you that self unaware?! You’ve become what you say you hate.
— Richard Grenell (@RichardGrenell) October 13, 2019
Conservative commentator and columnist Tammy Bruce joined in, calling out Navratilova who “has been on a mission to repair her image.”
Martina has been on a mission to repair her image with the unforgiving left. This is what happens when you feel you have to signal to your punishers that you can be trusted to parrot the narrative. No matter what, all the time. It’s awful what the left does to people. pic.twitter.com/LlM694WAIu

Navratilova also took a shot at the “trolls” who were calling her out.
The trolls are out! Civilians are getting killed in Syria and I am the problem? Get real!!!

Fortunately for the World War II veteran at the center of the battle of words on Twitter, the rest of the comments were grateful for his service and slammed the tennis star for her disrespect.
Please thank your Grandfather for his patriotism and his service. … from a grateful citizen of a grateful nation who will never forget the sacrifice he and his generation made for America and the world.

Thank you for going there with them. You represent America well.

Please give this dear hero a salute from me. God bless him!

It’s abhorrent what she said to .@RichardGrenell & his loved ones. Sadly it’s typical of the hate we so often experience.
