Democrat presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren is running a text ad that disparages Facebook for allowing President Donald Trump to advertise freely on its platform like every other candidate running for office.
What’s curious about the ad is that it’s been run on Facebook itself, and much like Warren’s own life story, it begins with a glaring lie.
“Breaking news: Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook just endorsed Donald Trump for re-election,” the ad reads.

Warren’s campaign is clever. They’re running this false ad to highlight that Facebook allows political candidates to run false ads pic.twitter.com/58myvTdg3R

It continues by explaining the reason for the lie.
“You’re probably shocked, and you might be thinking: ‘How could this possibly be true?'” the ad reads. “Well, it’s not. (Sorry). But what Zuckerberg *has* done is given Donald Trump free reign to lie on his platform — and then to pay Facebook gobs of money to push out their lies to American voters.”
“If Trump tries to lie in a TV ad, most networks will refuse to air it. But Facebook just cashes Trump’s checks. Facebook already helped elect Donald Trump once. Now, they’re deliberately allowing a candidate to intentionally lie to the American people. It’s time to hold Mark Zuckerberg accountable — add your name if you agree.”
The deceptive ad reportedly links to a sign-up page on the senator’s campaign website. It’s presumed the ad is being used to collect the email addresses of unsuspecting Trump haters.
Warren doubled down her rhetoric in a set of tweets posted Saturday morning:
Facebook changed their ads policy to allow politicians to run ads with known lies—explicitly turning the platform into a disinformation-for-profit machine. This week, we decided to see just how far it goes.

Facebook holds incredible power to affect elections and our national debate. They’ve decided to let political figures lie to you—even about Facebook itself—while their executives and their investors get even richer off the ads containing these lies.
— Elizabeth Warren (@ewarren) October 12, 2019
Once again, we’re seeing Facebook throw its hands up to battling misinformation in the political discourse, because when profit comes up against protecting democracy, Facebook chooses profit.
— Elizabeth Warren (@ewarren) October 12, 2019
The Trump campaign is currently spending $1 million a *week* on ads including ones containing known lies—ads that TV stations refuse to air because they’re false. Facebook just takes the cash, no questions asked. https://t.co/3gDD6ILJpy

Facebook already helped elect Donald Trump once through negligence. Now, they’ve changed their policy so they can profit from lies to the American people. It’s time to hold Mark Zuckerberg accountable—add your name if you agree: https://t.co/Z9DNwPNaTH

Much of what Warren claimed was hogwash.
For instance, the idea that Facebook “helped elect” the president is a conspiracy theory rooted in the decidedly fascist belief that allowing conservatives the opportunity to voice their concerns and perspectives on the issues of the day is wrong and must be stopped.
It’s an especially galling conspiracy theory given all the evidence showing that social media companies and tech giants like Facebook, among many others, boast a bias against conservatives. In fairness to FB, it’s at least been trying to address its bias.
The same cannot be said of Google, which, besides continuing to try and censor and silence conservatives, has been credibly accused of affecting the 2016 election on then-Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton’s behalf, not Trump’s behalf.
But for some reason, Google’s pro-Clinton manipulation has never troubled Warren. Nor has she displayed any concern about reports from experts that the combined manipulation of all of America’s left-wing tech giants could affect the next election by the millions.
Instead, Warren remains obsessively fixated on the free speech rights of not only the president but those openly conservative news outlets and blogs that support his administration.
Her ostensible concern is that the president has been spreading lies. But none of his alleged “lies” appear to be actual lies.
For instance:
They’re allowing Trump to spend over $1 million a week right now for ads on their platform—including ones that air the same lies that TV stations won’t. Here’s an example of an ad that Facebook let Trump run despite being obviously untrue: https://t.co/sQdKCmrkOr pic.twitter.com/2X2S95Ep0H
— Elizabeth Warren (@ewarren) October 7, 2019
According to Warren, it’s “obviously untrue” that Democrats have admitted to wanting to repeal the Second Amendment.
A survey conducted last year found that a third of the Democrat Party supports eliminating the Second Amendment. Meanwhile, during a Democrat primary debate last month, candidate Beto O’Rourke bluntly admitted that he plans to confiscate certain weapons if he ever becomes president.
“Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47!” he roared in excitement. “We’re not going to allow it to be used against a fellow American anymore.”
To surmise that Democrats are generally in favor of eliminating the Second Amendment seems fair given the Democrats’ outlandish rhetoric and radical views.
Warren has also complained about an ad by the president that lays out credible allegations of corruption surrounding 2020 contender former Vice President Joe Biden.
Facebook already helped elect Donald Trump once. Now, they’re deliberately allowing a candidate to intentionally lie to the American people.
This is a serious threat to our democracy. We need transparency and accountability from Facebook. https://t.co/anu0pWSqS5

But once again, there’s no lie. Despite claims otherwise, the allegations against Biden are highly credible. And even if they weren’t, allegations are allegations, not lies. In fact, the only observable lie here appears to be the one told by Warren herself.
