Democrat presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders drew scrutiny from both the media and his supporters Friday when the doctors who’d treated him earlier in the week for a then-unknown heart condition revealed that he had, in fact, suffered from a heart attack.
“The 78-year-old was at a campaign event Tuesday when he experienced chest discomfort and was taken to a hospital where he was diagnosed with a heart attack,” The Denver Post has confirmed.
“The senator was transferred to Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center where doctors inserted two stents to open up a blocked artery in his heart, according to a statement from the Las Vegas doctors.”
His stunning, unexpected hospitalization led to theories his campaign might be over, in part because the senator’s campaign responded to the emergency by promptly canceling all his upcoming campaign events and also reportedly canceling a $1.3 million ad buy.

Some wondered why he would cancel everything. The questions only further intensified Friday when the actual details of his hospitalization were finally released to the public.
“Sanders Said He Had a Common Heart Procedure. So Why the Mystery?” a New York Times headline reads.
“Mr. Sanders’s emergency — the sudden onset of chest pain known as angina — is one that thousands of other Americans experience each year. …,” the piece notes.
“Doctors often release patients who undergo such procedures in a day or two. Mr. Sanders remained in the hospital until Friday evening, when — after three days of revealing few details about his condition — his campaign confirmed that Mr. Sanders had suffered a heart attack.”
Yet prior to Friday, the senator’s campaign refused to disclose “whether blood and electrocardiogram tests showed he had a heart attack” and refused to allow “reporters to interview his doctors.” There was no transparency whatsoever.

Why did Bernie’s campaign lie about his health?
It’s not a good look to cover-up a full blown heart attack.

Despite all the secrecy and conspiracy theories that spawned because of his campaign’s silence, three days later Sanders waltzed out of the hospital as if nothing had even happened.

He even released a video statement acting as if everything was perfectly hunky-dory.
“Hello everybody,” he said in the video recorded alongside his wife. “We’re in Las Vegas. I just got out of the hospital a few hours ago, and I’m feeling so much better. I just want to thank all of you for the love and warm wishes you sent me. See you soon on the campaign trail.”

The video did little to alleviate his supporters’ concerns.
“I am glad you’re feeling better. I have questions though, why did we never hear a doctor report and recommendation? Your health is America’s business. This primary season will only get more stressful I feel that you don’t have the stamina to move on,” one critical supporter tweeted to him.
“Hope @BernieSanders recovers well. Seems extremely deceptive he, his family and campaign hid this crucial detail from America this entire week? Why did we have to hear this from the Doctor? WTF else is wrong here?” another wrote.

Meanwhile, his conservative critics had another pressing question: If Sanders hates America’s private health care system so much, why didn’t he travel to Cuba or Venezuela for his heart surgery? Hmm?
