Oh, Bernie: Sanders says he’s ready to beat Mike Pence should Trump be forced out

Sen. Bernie Sanders is already gearing up to defeat Vice President Mike Pence at the ballot box if President Trump does not make it past the Democrats’ impeachment attempt.

The Vermont senator and 2020 presidential hopeful tweeted out his blunt message on Monday, essentially declaring victory no matter who the Republican will be on the ticket.

“If it’s not Trump, we’re gonna beat Mike Pence,” Sanders tweeted.

The “People for Bernie” Twitter account revealed that the campaign is not just about defeating Trump, but “defeating everything that enabled him and his ethos,” essentially dismissing democracy and telling about half the country that they are on the targeted list.

While it is entirely possible that the Democratic-led House of Representatives will move ahead and vote to impeach the president, the proceedings will hit a wall in the Senate where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has already said that, though he would have “no choice” than to take it up, the GOP majority would not be on board for impeaching the president.

A two-thirds majority, or 67 senators, would be needed to convict Trump and, in the trial that would follow, the vice president would assume power. In a world of unlikely scenarios, writers of an op-ed for The Washington Post wondered aloud what would happen if, according to the Presidential Succession Act of 1947, the third person in line to the Oval Office were to assume the reins.

“#PresidentPelosi was trending on social media after last week’s announcement of an impeachment inquiry — even though it may seem far-fetched that President Trump and Vice President Pence would be forced from office over abuse of power related to the administration’s dealings with Ukraine or other misdeeds,” Robert Atkins and Adam P. Frankel wrote.

And if a Pelosi presidency gives one sleepless nights, a Sanders administration just gave voters another peek into what four years could like with a socialist in the White House.

The Vermont lawmaker proposed Monday that he would aim to reduce the “income inequality” gap by punishing companies that show “large gaps between their CEO and median worker pay,” hitting them with more aggressive taxes.

“We say to corporate America: If you don’t end your greed and corruption, we will end it for you,” he threatened in a tweet on Monday.

The new plan proposes that these companies “would see progressively higher corporate tax rates with the most unequal companies paying five percentage points more in corporate taxes.”

“The tax penalties would begin at 0.5 percentage points for companies that pay their top executives between 50 and 100 times more than their typical workers,” the plan states. “The highest penalty would kick in for companies that pay top executives over 500 times worker pay. These rates, if current corporate pay patterns continue, would raise around $150 billion over 10 years.”

Last week, Sanders declared that “billionaires should not exist” as he rolled out his “extreme wealth tax.”
