Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner seemed to be caught in an awkward moment at the 2019 Emmy Awards when the audience appeared to laugh at comments about their “real” and “unscripted” television show.

Social media was abuzz with reactions as the sisters made the remarks about their reality show, “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” and mocking laughter from the star-studded audience was caught on the broadcast Sunday.

“Our family knows first-hand how truly compelling television comes from real people, just being themselves,” 38-year-old Kardashian said as she joined her sister on stage at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles to present the Outstanding Reality TV award.

But Kardashian’s words were met with what was taken to be mocking laughter from the crowd, which was heard on the broadcast of the annual Hollywood gala, as her 23-year-old sister continued the sentence, “telling their stories, unfiltered and unscripted.”

It wasn’t clear if the sisters were annoyed by the laughter, as some outlets reported, or their comments were meant to be tongue-in-cheek and they were in on the joke.

The Kardashians have denied past accusations about scripted and faked plotlines on their reality show which is currently airing its 17th season on E!  Some viewers recently criticized the show for making the cheating scandal involving Jordyn Woods, Tristan Thompson and Khloe Kardashian into essentially a PR stunt.

But while Sunday’s laughter raised many questions about whether it was intended to be mocking the sisters or not, comedian Kathy Griffin was emphatic that the audience was laughing at the women, not with them.

“They were. They were laughing at them,” Griffin told “Entertainment Tonight” at HBO’s Emmys after-party on Sunday.

Griffin, who said she used to live next door to Kardashian and husband Kanye West, joked that “they get laughed at and then they go home and they count their money.”

“I think the people laughing at them are jealous,” talk show host Wendy Williams said on her show Monday. “You take your big education, going to drama school and all that other kind of — these girls make more money than the whole building.”

“Look, Kim, Kendall, Kris, and all you all — don’t be mad at them for laughing,” she continued. “People are still trying to kick y’alls back in for doing such big things in such a short period of time with the only thing you have, which is love for one another and the ability to make people follow you on Instagram. That’s it. That’s it.”
