Flag flop: Rep. Tlaib says she will fly altered flag to support DC statehood

Michigan Democrat Representative and “squad” member Rashida Tlaib proved just how little the American flag means to her by promising to display an altered version of it in support of D.C. getting recognized for statehood.

The altered flag would carry 51 stars instead of the usual 50.

Tlaib made her promise during a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing on a Democrat bill to recognize the District of Columbia at America’s 51st state. In preparation for the hearing, the city of D.C. ordered and displayed over 100 altered American flags with an extra star.

“I would love one. I would love to hang it outside of my office,” Tlaib told Mayor Muriel Bowser during the hearing on the statehood bill.

“Yes, got it,” the mayor replied.

“We revere our flag,” the mayor continued. “And we think it’s more perfect when every taxpaying American is represented on that flag.”

Displaying the flag would be a useless gesture as the congressional bill currently has no Republican support, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he will not bring the bill to a vote in the Senate.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer have both put their support behind the bill, which currently has over 200 co-sponsors.

If the bill were passed, it would require two senators and a House representative to be elected to represent D.C. The official district territory would exclude certain federal buildings and monuments.

Democrats have likely supported the bill because D.C. leans left and it would mean more left-leaning lawmakers. Republicans have argued against the bill since the framers of the Constitution always meant for D.C. to act as a federal district.

“D.C. residents have all of the responsibilities of citizenship but they have no congressional voting rights and only limited self-government,” Democratic committee chairman Elijah Cummings said in support of D.C. statehood through a prepared statement that was read at the hearing on the matter.

“This is not what the Founding Fathers intended,” Republican Congressman Jim Jordan argued. “They understood and they carefully crafted the Constitution so that the seat of the federal government would purposely and specifically not be within a state.”

While Tlaib’s comment was small, it shows an extraordinary disrespect for the flag of the United States, a flag that is worn by soldiers in the military, a flag that students pledge allegiance to, a flag that carries with it a unique history that should always be respected.

For her to so cavalierly toss it to the side and say she will display an altered flag as a United States representative is beyond careless. Should every lawmaker fly a flag altered to push their personal beliefs?

Many feel the flag is too sacred to be used in such a cavalier way. To change the flag, you need a committee, not an upstart. This is something every United States lawmaker should understand.
