Warren waffles: Won’t say if new taxes for middle class under her plan

Elizabeth Warren took a deep dive down the tax rabbit hole and couldn’t seem to find her way out during a recent interview with Stephen Colbert.

That Stephen Colbert … the Trump-bashing, liberal talk-show host.

Like many of the candidates before her, the Massachusetts senator wasn’t forthcoming when it came to where the government will get all of this extra money. Why do they get so squeamish? Because there is only one answer to this question — raising taxes. And what middle-class American already burdened with a heavy tax-load wants to hear that they will potentially be giving even more of their hard-earned money over to the government?

Stephen Colbert was – surprisingly – the latest person to call out a Democrat presidential candidate over whether their plans will require raising taxes on middle-class Americans. The exchange between him and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren occurred on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” The two were discussing the senator’s support for a “Medicare for all” plan.

“You keep being asked in the debates, how are you going to pay for it? Are you going to raise the middle-class taxes?” Colbert asked about a “Medicare for all” plan.

“Right,” Warren responded.

After an awkward pause that elicited laughter from the audience, Colbert asked, “How are you going to pay for it? Are you going to raise the middle-class taxes?”

Warren responded by talking about “costs” going up for the wealthiest Americans and big corporations. This is a knee-jerk response from Democrats when asked about raising taxes, but it means nothing because they never define who the “wealthiest” Americans are, and they never acknowledge the fact that big corporations and “wealthy” Americans already front a huge portion of the government’s bloated budget year after year.

“Taxes, which is what you mean by ‘costs’?” Colbert bluntly asked after Warren’s non-answer.

“Yes. And hardworking middle-class families are going to see their cost goes down…” Warren said.

“But will their taxes go up?” Colbert interrupted.

“Here’s the thing,” Warren said, but Colbert interrupted her before she could launch into another empty campaign speech.

“Here’s the thing. I’ve listened to these answers a few times before, and I just want to make a parallel suggestion to you that you might defend the taxes, perhaps, you’re not mentioning in your sentence,” the usually-leftist comedian said.

Colbert then seemed to give the senator pointers on how to sell her point better.

“Isn’t Medicare-for-All like public school? There might be taxes for it, but you save money sending your kids to school, and do you want to live in a world where your kids aren’t educated? Do you want to live in a world where your fellow Americans are dying?” he said.

“I accept your point and believe in your point,” Warren responded in the cringe-fashion only a lifelong politician can master.

While Colbert is typically politically motivated to stump for the left, it was good to see him push someone like Warren on their empty and dangerous rhetoric. However, it’s also sad to not see him go after her harder. Warren walked away from this interview still refusing to state the obvious: if she is elected president, middle-class Americans will absolutely see their taxes go up.
