Chutzpah: NY Times reporter tries to shirk blame for Kavanaugh penis tweet

The chutzpah from New York Times reporter Robin Pogrebin is something to behold, as she tried to skirt responsibility for a deleted tweet.

Pogrebin was asked about the tweet Monday during an early appearance on CNN and she refused to own it, claiming that would be a “distraction.”

“We decided to not really try to excavate blame for this tweet but to realize in a vacuum it was ill worded and poor judgement and shouldn’t have gone out so we took it down and apologized,” she said.

“All I can say is the tweet was written and the tweet was sent out and it shouldn’t have been sent out,” Pogrebin added. “I just feel like it’s a distraction to try to go back over that.”

Her efforts to skirt responsibility did not hold up very long, as Pogrebin admitted in a later appearance on “The View” that she was the author of the tweet.

Pogrebin, a culture reporter for the Times, and colleague Kate Kelly, who covers Wall Street for the newspaper, paired up on a new book about Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

The Times ran a “botched” essay Sunday based on the book that detailed a new claim of sexually inappropriate behavior by Kavanaugh. The incident allegedly took place in college, some 35 years ago, and the victim is identified as Deborah Ramirez.

According to the Times reporters, Kavanaugh put his penis in Ramirez’s face in 1983 at a dorm party — even though the “victim” refused to be interviewed and friends are saying she does not even remember the incident.

This critical information was left out of the essay and the Times, which has been hit with widespread criticism of its handling of the story, issued a clarification but there was also a now-deleted tweet at the center of the controversy.

The tweet read:  “Having a penis thrust in your face at a drunken dorm party may seem like harmless fun. But when Brett Kavanaugh did it to her, Deborah Ramirez says, it confirmed that she didn’t belong at Yale in the first place.”

Citing a Times source familiar with the matter, Politico reported that Pogrebin wrote the offensive tweet.

“It was really neglectful,” the insider said. “There were serious errors made along the way.”

The Times apologized for the tweet: “A tweet that went out from the @NYTOpinion account yesterday was clearly inappropriate and offensive. We apologize for it and are reviewing the decision-making with those involved.”

And while she admitted that she wrote the tweet, she would explain that her intent was not understood by the great unwashed masses.

What is clear in the appearance is that liberal reporters live in a world all their own, where truth and honesty take on entirely different meanings than in the real world.

“It was a misworded tweet, but what happens at the Times is the reporters are asked to draft Tweets and we’re also asked to draft headlines,” Pogrebin explained. “They don’t always get used, sent out, they often don’t.”

“I drafted this with this in mind to have actually the opposite effect, which is to anticipate those who would say, ‘A guy pulling down his pants at a party when they’re drunk is on the spectrum of sexual misconduct. It’s not sexual assault. It’s not rape. What’s the big deal?’” she added.

The whole debacle is so egregious, President Trump called for wide-scale resignations at the New York Times over the “Kavanaugh SMEAR story,” declaring that the paper is “dead.”

“I call for the Resignation of everybody at The New York Times involved in the Kavanaugh SMEAR story, and while you’re at it, the Russian Witch Hunt Hoax, which is just as phony! They’ve taken the Old Grey Lady and broken her down, destroyed her virtue and ruined her reputation…,” the president tweeted. “She can never recover, and will never return to Greatness, under current Management. The Times is DEAD, long live The New York Times!”
