Ted Cruz: Donald Trump has ‘broken the Democratic Party’

Sen. Ted Cruz believes last week’s Democrat primary debate was just more proof that President Donald Trump has “broken the Democratic Party.”

The Texas Republican noted how Democrats are so focused on “hating” the president that it is defining them, speaking Sunday on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.”

Cruz acknowledged his previous remarks, brought up by host George Stephanopoulos, that Texas would become a battleground state in the 2020 election, as it continues to become more divided and as five GOP House members from the Lone Star state have already indicated they would not be seeking re-election.

“That’s really saying something that the state of Texas is going to be a presidential battleground next time around,” Stephanopoulos said.

“I think that’s right. I think Texas is divided. I think our country is divided,” Cruz replied before turning his attention to the third Democratic presidential debate in Houston last week, which he called a “very bad night” for Democrats.

“I think Thursday night was a very bad night for the Democrats. I think Thursday night the Democrats galloped even further to the left,” the Texas lawmaker said, noting how none of the 10 presidential candidates on the stage even mentioned the strong economy.

“If you look at Thursday night, the entire night of the debate, not a single Democrat talked about jobs. Not a single Democrat talked about the economy, about the fact that we’ve got the lowest African-American unemployment ever recorded, the lowest Hispanic unemployment ever recorded,” Cruz said.

“Instead, what the Democrats told the American people is they want to raise your taxes, they want to triple the price you pay for a gallon of gas at the pump, they want open borders, they want to take away your health insurance and they want to take away your guns,” he continued.

In fact, the debate night was filled with predictable attacks on the president, as Sen. Kamala Harris demonstrated at the outset when she addressed Trump directly because “we all know he’s watching.” The president had the last laugh though because he was certainly not watching the Democrats’ circus act but was giving a speech in Baltimore.

South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg attacked Trump and any American who supports his immigration policies as essentially “supporting racism.”

Cruz slammed the Democrats and their narrative, telling Stephanopoulos they have lost their focus.

“Listen, that is an agenda designed to resonate in the faculty lounges at an Ivy League college,” he said. “If you’re sipping sherry in a faculty lounge, you’ve got your party!”

“But show me one steelworker, show me one truck driver, show me one person in America who actually works for a living who is interested in that radical agenda,” the senator added.

“The problem is, George, I think Donald Trump has broken the Democratic Party,” Cruz concluded.

“They are defined now just by hating him,” he explained. “They ought to be the party of jobs. They used to be a party focused on jobs. They’re not anymore.”
