Biden calls for ban of magazines that hold more than one bullet

The 2020 Democratic presidential field seems determined to disarm America in the face of a growing number of mass shootings, with front-runner Joe Biden throwing out his latest proposal to accomplish that — ban magazines that hold more than one bullet.

The former vice president was speaking to reporters in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Monday and was asked about government inaction in the face of a shooting over the weekend in Texas.

With Hurricane Dorian dominating the headlines, Biden responded by talking about climate change, before changing gears to call for the “elimination” of what he termed “assault-style weapons [and] magazines that can hold multiple bullets in them.”

This would not only ban semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15 and AK-47, but most firearms sold today have magazines that hold multiple rounds.

“It’s about time the president got out of this state of denial on two critical things and they both came ahead this weekend,” Biden told reporters.

“One is climate change — it’s an existential threat. This guy can no longer deny the science,” he said, insisting we can’t wait “another 18 months for something to happen in terms of climate.”

“On dealing with firearms, it is irrational with — all due respect for the governor of Texas — on the very day you see a mass shooting and we’re talking about loosening access to have guns being able to take them places of worship, store it in school, and it’s absolutely irrational. It’s all about special interests and it has to stop,” he added.

New laws went into effect Sunday in Texas that loosen gun restrictions, which make it easier for Texans to protect themselves in schools, places of worship and other places.

Biden then offered his far-reaching proposal that would disarm millions.

“The idea that we don’t have elimination of assault-type weapons, magazines that can hold multiple bullets in them, it’s absolutely mindless,” he said. “It’s no violation of the Second Amendment. It’s just a bow of special interests of the gun manufacturers and the NRA.”

Biden did not put a number on how many bullets he would allow for in a magazine, though gun control advocates have long called for banning magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds.

As for Saturday’s shooting in Odessa, which claimed the lives of seven people, the 37-year-old gunman had reportedly been on a “downward spiral,” and was fired from his job before firing on state troopers while being pulled over for a routine traffic stop.

“He was a long spiral of going down. He didn’t wake up Saturday morning and walk into his company and then it happened. He went to that company in trouble, probably been in trouble for a while … we really need the public’s help to reach out to us when they see people in that downward spiral that may be on that road to violence,” said Christopher Combs, special agent in charge of the FBI’s office in San Antonio.

Yet another example of mental illness being the likely culprit in these shootings, as President Donald Trump has repeatedly pointed out — something Democrats remain reluctant to acknowledge.

But coming for your guns is right up their alley, as social media was only too happy to point out.
