One would think that NBCUniversal would want to lie low after two embarrassing blows to their reputation as a media outlet, but alas, it would appear that is not the case.
To recap, on Wednesday MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell was forced to issue a milquetoast retraction of a thinly-sourced claim that Russian oligarchs had co-signed some of President Donald Trump’s loans. This followed some legal prompting from the Trump family, of course.
It wasn’t long after that ill-corroborated allegation was aired that another NBCUniversal employee was forced to issue another correction to a story. Ken Dilanian deleted a tweet that got all of the facts wrong regarding the policy change to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ classification of children born overseas. He swiftly issued a correction once it was pointed out to him that he was spreading fake news.
But it seems that MSNBC is dedicated to out-doing itself in the realm of the ridiculous, by allowing a guest to accuse the president of supporting “a physical war” as a way of winning the 2020 election.
Brittney Cooper, a professor of women’s and gender studies at Rutger’s University, was discussing warning signs of the economy while on “The Beat” Thursday. Naturally, she shifted attention toward Trump and went on to make her absurd and biased claim.
“I am more concerned because this is not a man who retreats easily,” she whined. “What he has done is pursued a policy of protectionism. And one of the things we know is if we look at the World War II example is that protectionism and isolationism in the US context does not work. And one of the ways we got ourselves out of the slump of protectionism in the 1940s was we entered World War II.”
“So, the other thing we should begin to watch is the continued military posturing toward all of these countries because one of the old school American rescue missions is get us into a war because that is often seen as another driver of the economy,” she continued. “And Trump wants one big key thing under his belt, either he wants his wall or to ride out on the glory of the economy. If he can’t have that, I believe he’s willing to start a physical war in order to do it.”
Watch the clip below:
Not only did this absurd supposition get no pushback, but fellow guest, race-monger Rev. Al Sharpton went even further in insulting the President, saying “if you think the economy sinking is frightening, imagine our country at war with him as Commander in Chief.” Perhaps he forgot our ongoing military campaigns in the Middle East that Trump has overseen for his entire Presidency.
It’s unclear why Cooper believes that the president would be willing to sacrifice the lives of brave young men and women to win the election, but maybe this is the first time she was asked a question unrelated to “women’s and gender studies,” and she wasn’t sure how to answer. Whatever the case may be, one thing is certain: There is nothing a progressive liberal won’t say to disparage President Trump.
