DNC proudly announces ‘largest religious group within Dem Party’

The Democrat Party has somehow moved even further left.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has passed a new resolution praising America’s “religiously unaffiliated” as the “largest religious group within the Democratic Party.”

“Religiously unaffiliated Americans overwhelmingly share the Democratic Party’s values,” the resolution states.

The resolution also says that the political party should push for “rational public policy based on sound science and universal humanistic values.”

Another part of the resolution tackles “patriotism,” which is not a word many would associate with the Democrat Party in its current form.

“[T]he religiously unaffiliated demographic represents the largest religious group within the Democratic Party, growing from 19% in 2007 to one in three today,” says the resolution. “… [T]he Democratic Party is an inclusive organization that recognizes that morals, values, and patriotism are not unique to any particular religion, and are not necessarily reliant on having a religious worldview at all.”

It also later goes after religious voters, which seems an odd tactic with a presidential election right around the corner.

“[T]hose most loudly claiming that morals, values, and patriotism must be defined by their particular religious views have used those religious views, with misplaced claims of ‘religious liberty,’ to justify public policy that has threatened the civil rights and liberties of many Americans, including but not limited to the LGBT community, women, and ethnic and religious/nonreligious minorities,” it says.

The resolution was passed unanimously on August 24 by the DNC at their summer meeting in San Francisco, California.

The Secular Coalition of America, a group that supports public policies in favor of atheists, agnostics, and humanists, has already praised the resolution from the Democrat Party.

“America was founded as a secular government charged with representing and protecting the freedoms of people of all faiths and none,” Sarah Levin, director of governmental affairs for the Secular Coalition of America, said in reaction to the stance from the party. “I am proud to see the Democratic Party take that to heart by bringing secular Americans into the fold.”

The Freedom From Religion Foundation’s co-president, Annie Laurie Gaylor, also praised the resolution and called it a “political landmark” that is “overdue.”

The FFRF “is optimistic that the DNC resolution is a sign of bigger and better things to come for freethinkers, and would like to see every party at every level of government adopt similar resolutions.”

The move is clearly one that shows the direction the party will be headed in the 2020 presidential election. With President Donald Trump taking the evangelical vote in 2016, Democrats are clearly banking on going in the opposite direction with their candidate in the next election.

The trouble with this resolution is not the embrace of non-religious people, but the dismissal of believers. The Democratic Party has put out a resolution that basically feels like a slap in the face to religious people everywhere, which will likely not go well for them in 2020.
