‘Heterosexuality just not working,’ NBC News says

An NBC News opinion piece claimed that today’s women do not need heterosexuality and that many realize it is the “bedrock of their global oppression.”

The strange op-ed by Marcie Bianco for the NBC News website sparked a wave of reaction on social media after announcing that women are reclaiming power by speaking out about sexuality, using the recent break-up of singer Miley Cyrus and actor Liam Hemsworth as a jumping off point.

Bianco noted that the public comments by Cyrus following the couple’s divorce is “a blow to the patriarchy,” citing an assortment of recent stories – from the death of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein to mass shootings in Ohio and Texas –  that have “laid bare the strictures of an American patriarchy on the edge of a nervous breakdown.”

“As the status quo, heterosexuality is just not working,” Bianco concluded, going on to prove the evil nature of men and the response of women as they apparently opt to live without them.

“As a snapshot of 2019 America, these stories present a startling picture: Men continue to coerce, harass, rape and kill girls and women — and go to extreme lengths to avoid responsibility for their actions. On the other side of the issue, girls and women are challenging heterosexuality, and even absconding from it altogether,” the California-based writer and columnist at the Women’s Media Center wrote.

“Men need heterosexuality to maintain their societal dominance over women. Women, on the other hand, are increasingly realizing not only that they don’t need heterosexuality, but that it also is often the bedrock of their global oppression,” Bianco continued.

“Patriarchy is at its most potent when oppression doesn’t feel like oppression, or when it is packaged in terms of biology, religion, or basic social needs like security, comfort, acceptance and success,” the writer went on in the bizarre twist of logic. “Heterosexuality offers women all these things as selling points to their consensual subjection.”

In one jaw-dropping portion of her rant, Bianco aimed her pen at “those on the right.”

This is a far cry from the type of freedom espoused by those on the right, for whom freedom, as I wrote in an earlier article on how misogyny is the driver of mass shootings in America, is conflated with domination. In this context, freedom is actually possessed by a select few, as it is dependent upon the oppression — rather than the liberation — of disempowered people, particularly women and minorities.

Bianco contends that recent examples of women taking back this power from men is “a powerful assertion of their bodily autonomy and control over their sexuality,” while declaring that men – especially heterosexual men – are the problem.

“Where men seem to never have to take responsibility for their actions, women always must take responsibility for not only their own actions but the actions of men,” the writer went on. “Absconding from responsibility is the quintessential strategy of the patriarchy; it’s how men stay in control and never lose their power.”

“While men stew in their mess, women are rising,” she added. “They are taking back control of their lives and their bodies and they are questioning the foundation of the patriarchy — heterosexuality — that has kept them blindly subordinate for centuries.”

One has to wonder what would happen if a man wrote an opinion piece condemning women as the source of the world’s problems.

Social media users were incredulous, questioning the sanity of the writer and even the professional decision by NBC News to publish her screed.
