Following anti-Semitic Muslim Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s stunning, widely panned decision Friday to reject an offer to travel to Israel to visit her grandmother, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to both blast the congresswoman for her grandstanding stunt, and to defend Israel.
Look:
Israel was very respectful & nice to Rep. Rashida Tlaib, allowing her permission to visit her “grandmother.” As soon as she was granted permission, she grandstanded & loudly proclaimed she would not visit Israel. Could this possibly have been a setup? Israel acted appropriately!

Rep. Tlaib wrote a letter to Israeli officials desperately wanting to visit her grandmother. Permission was quickly granted, whereupon Tlaib obnoxiously turned the approval down, a complete setup. The only real winner here is Tlaib’s grandmother. She doesn’t have to see her now!

Like it or not, Tlaib and Omar are fast becoming the face of the Democrat Party. Cortez (AOC) is fuming, not happy about this!

Both Tlaib and fellow anti-Semitic Muslim Rep. Ilhan Omar had been planning to visit Israel in the coming days as part of a trip funded by an anti-Semitic group whose members “have expressed support for terrorism against Israel.”
When Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu learned of the trip, he promptly issued a ban on their visit, citing both the trip’s shady funding source and the Muslim congresswomen’s history of activism on behalf of the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.
However, the PM wrote that he would allow Tlaib entry if she submitted “a humanitarian request to visit her relatives” and pledged “not to act to promote boycotts against Israel during her visit.” In response, the congresswoman naturally began crying about her grandmother.
This woman right here is my sity. She deserves to live in peace & with human dignity. I am who I am because of her. The decision by Israel to bar her granddaughter, a U.S. Congresswoman, is a sign of weakness b/c the truth of what is happening to Palestinians is frightening. pic.twitter.com/GGcFLiH9N3

“I would like to request admittance to Israel in order to visit my relatives, and specifically my grandmother, who is in her 90s and lives in Bet Ur al-Fouqa,” she wrote in a letter to Israeli Interior Minister Aryeh Deri. “This could be my last opportunity to see her. I will respect any restrictions and will not promote boycotts against Israel during my visit.”
Given the congresswoman’s suggestion that her elderly grandmother, 90s, could conceivably die any day now, Deri chose Friday morning to approve her request. In response, Tlaib did exactly what Trump claimed she did: “[S]he grandstanded & loudly proclaimed she would not visit Israel.”
And in explaining why she now suddenly refuses to travel to Israel, she resorted to spouting the same sort of anti-Semitic rhetoric about alleged Israeli “oppression” and “racism” that had initially inspired Netanyahu to block her visit to the Jewish state.
The president’s tweets appeared to be well-received by the vast majority of Americans who view Tlaib and Omar (as well as their “squad” peers) unfavorably.
Okay. This is a legit sick burn. https://t.co/NX0slMDxzd

I don’t usually like the president’s trolling but this made me laugh out loud https://t.co/ch88a80AFY

As of Saturday morning, the president’s Tweet about Tlaib’s grandmother being the “real winner” boasted nearly 130,000 likes and 32,000 retweets.
Despite seemingly being the American people’s favorite tweet of the three-tweet thread, this was, in reality, the least factually accurate one. While yes, it was an arguably “legit sick burn,” the fact remains that the congresswoman’s grandmother is “proud” of her for reasons that remain unclear.
“I am proud of her,” the grandmother, West Bank resident Muftiyah Tlaib, told The Washington Post. “Who wouldn’t be proud of a granddaughter like that? I love her and am so proud of her.”
The remarks were made before the ban on her granddaughter was lifted by Interior Minister Deri and the congresswoman subsequently decided to cancel the trip altogether.
“She’s in a big position and she cannot visit her grandmother. So what good is the position?” she reportedly added, apparently unaware that being a congresswoman doesn’t entitle her grandchild with the right to trash America’s closest ally.
Her remarks to the Post were likewise made before the congresswoman announced that she’d be spending the evening hobnobbing with an anti-Semitic group linked to white nationalists and BDS.
“Rashida Tlaib will be spending tonight at a Shabbat gathering w/ Jewish Voices for Peace,” The Atlantic journalist Emma Green confirmed Friday afternoon. “It’s a notable choice of Jewish ally for this moment: an org that supports BDS, is fairly marginal in the Jewish institutional world, + is widely seen as anti-Israel in that world.”
This stunning announcement attracted even more backlash, given as it lent the appearance that the congresswoman was more interested in promoting the destruction of Israel than she was in visiting her elderly grandmother:

Also, JVP has members who aren’t Jewish. And they’ve associated w white nationalists as noted here https://t.co/So6UbEjuv2

Instead of visiting her grandmother, Tlaib would rather promote the destruction of Israel: https://t.co/3Qjl7a03As

Tlaib boycotts her *OWN GRANDMOTHER* to spite Israel!

Palestian society has long promoted the destruction of a Israel over any love of their own relatives.

Just another Palestinian terrorist using an elderly woman as a human shield. Sad.

Hate over family, over country.
The palestinian way.

Combined, the congresswoman’s actions do seem to strongly suggest that the trip could have indeed “possibly … been a setup,” as the president noted in his tweets, and that it was never about promoting international diplomacy or meeting with family but rather, hurting Israel.
