Black liberation group planning march to protest arrest of alleged Philly cop-shooter

A militant anti-law enforcement group is planning a march in Philadelphia to demand the release of suspected cop-shooter Maurice Hill.

Black Community Control of Police, which claims African-Americans have the right to be armed and resist law enforcement, is planning to hold the event on Friday in support of the 36-year-old felon with a long criminal history who was arrested after a more than seven-hour standoff during which six police officers were shot and wounded.

“Free Maurice Hill,” reads the flyer from the liberation group posted on Facebook.

“The police are an occupying military force in the black community and should be met with resistance,” the flyer reads.

While the group is pro-Second Amendment, the call is to “defend African resistance” against what they perceive is the oppression of law enforcement.

Hill was arrested after allegedly shooting six Philadelphia police officers in the city’s Nicetown-Tioga section on Wednesday. Police were serving a narcotics warrant at the house where Hill was when he opened fire and began a long standoff during which two officers and three other people were trapped inside the building. He eventually surrendered to police after midnight.

US Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania William McSwain said Hill “spent most of his adult life bouncing in and out of the criminal justice system,” speaking at a press conference Thursday.

The suspect’s lengthy criminal record dates back to 2001 when he was 18 years old, and includes about a dozen arrests and six convictions on charges including burglary, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, illegal possession of guns, and drugs.

The Black Community Control of Police is now on the move to get Hill freed and make a point about oppression, regardless of his long rap sheet and the danger he may pose to others. Earlier this week, the group posted a flyer on Facebook claiming that it’s “never safe” to talk to police.

Hours before the standoff on Wednesday, Muslim activists were busy touting an anti-police rally that had been planned for Thursday.

“Join The Rally Against Terrorist Racist Phila. Police Officers,” a flyer for the event read.
