Gun Owners of America warn Trump: We don’t support your gun-control legislation

A gun rights group warned President Donald Trump that he could alienate some of his base by passing overly restrictive gun-control laws in the wake of the El Paso and Ohio mass shootings.

The Gun Owners of America (GOA) has more than 2 million members nationwide. The Second-Amendment advocacy group urged Trump to reject calls for more gun control following the twin weekend shootings.

“We think it’s important for Congress and the President to know that gun owners do not support the gun control measures Trump is advocating,” GOA vice president Erich Pratt told the Daily Caller.

Pratt worries that Trump is becoming like past presidents, who started pushing for more gun control following shootings. Keep in mind that multiple shootings occur every weekend in the Democratic-led city of Chicago — which has among the toughest gun-control laws in the United States.

“Many presidents have failed to recognize how gun control motivates voters,” Pratt said. “He doesn’t know how volatile this issue is. It will be interesting to see how the grassroots react to his comments.”

Specifically, Pratt said he was alarmed when President Trump said he supports “red flag” laws, which would allow the government to confiscate guns from someone who has been red-flagged as dangerous.

“It is frustrating to see President Donald Trump’s continued support for so-called ‘red flag’ laws,” Pratt said. “These ‘red flag’ laws — properly known as gun confiscation orders — are incompatible with actual due process and allow for the confiscation of firearms from innocent Americans.”

Trump also proposed mental-health checks be added among the qualifications for gun possession. However, the GOA also opposes this, saying the process could be abused by anti-Second Amendment zealots.

“The GOA opposes all background checks for gun purchases, since unfortunately it could used as a drag net to disqualify individuals who should be able to own a gun,” said Pratt. “For instance, past proposals have included putting Social Security Disability recipients on the list.”

Meanwhile, Senator Lindsey Graham says “red flag” laws could be effective at curbing gun violence. Fifteen states and the District of Columbia have red flag laws. However, neither Texas nor Ohio — where last weekend’s shootings occurred — had one.

“Many of these shootings involved individuals who showed signs of violent behavior that are either ignored or not followed up,” Graham said in a statement. “State Red Flag laws will provide the tools for law enforcement to do something about many of these situations before it’s too late.”

Graham added that he hopes that his “Republican and Democratic colleagues will join us to finally move forward in the effort to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people.”

Senator Graham also believes that mental health issues should be addressed when it comes to gun ownership. Despite the objections of groups like the Gun Owners of America, Graham says the program has strict requirements so due process is not abused.

“These grants will be given to law enforcement so they can hire and consult with mental health professionals to better determine which cases need to be acted upon,” Graham said in a statement. “This grant program also requires robust due process and judicial review. It does allow for quick action.”
