Ben & Jerry unveil new Bernie Sanders flavor, fans disappointed it’s not free

Yum, “woke” flavored ice cream. The more you eat, the more you support Medicare for all!

Ice cream creators Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield are known for their line of bizarrely named creamy confections, as well as their left-wing political advocacy.

Hailing from Vermont, their love for Bernie Sanders and his particular flavor of socialism is no secret. In 2016, Cohen formulated “Bernie’s Yearning,” a name that will forever be uncomfortable to say. While the flavor remained “unofficial” and was not created for mass production, it shares a lot of similarities with the one announced this week. Both will have a thick layer of chocolate on the top that the creators claim “represents all the wealth that has risen to the top 1%.” Eating instructions (because apparently, people need to be told how to eat commie-flavored ice cream) indicate that you are supposed to break the chocolate into “into lots of pieces” and mix it into the ice cream itself. A clever visual, to be sure.

But the difference between “Bernie’s Yearning” and “Bernie’s Back” is the “butter toffee backbone going down the middle.”

“The chocolate disc represents all the wealth that has risen to the top 1%,” reads a description on the Bernie Sanders website. “The backbone represents Bernie’s steadfast determination to un-rig our economy. And the hot cinnamon is our political revolution holding politicians’ feet to the fire to make America work for working people of all races and genders.”

The only way to obtain a pint of this limited-edition ice cream is to sign up to receive alerts from the Sanders campaign, which is totally not worth it.

To be clear, Ben & Jerry’s was sold to Unilever in 2000. The new owners have been quick to distance themselves from the previous owners’ political advocacy, and insist that this unique flavor is not in any way affiliated with the official brand.

On Twitter, Cohen claims that “Bernie’s Back” is merely “the first in a full line of Bernie flavors. We’re going all the way this time.”

But this isn’t the first political statement to hit the freezer section. In November of 2018, Ben & Jerry’s released “Pecan Resist,” a flavor dedicated to “resist[ing] the Trump administration’s regressive and discriminatory policies and build[ing] a future that values inclusivity, equality, and justice for people of color, women, the LGBTQ community, refugees, and immigrants.” One of the organizations supported by the sale of this dessert was the “Women’s March,” which is the some of the persistently anti-Semitic Linda Sarsour. And even when confronted with evidence of her wrongdoing, the ice cream company insisted on backing her. It’s a good thing they’re not interested in picking the winning horse.

Aside from the questionable flavor combination of hot cinnamon and butter toffee, the irony of a Democratic Socialist being supported by a company that gained all of its wealth and notoriety via capitalism should not be over-looked here. It’s like a butcher who supports veganism: Eventually, it’ll come back to bite you in the wallet.

The Twitter responses were mixed, and that’s being kind. Everyone from capitalists to feminists were bashing the idea of this method of promotion – for different reasons.

Some hated the idea of people who used capitalism to become millionaires now utilizing their platform to shut that door behind them.

Others are progressives who have simply had it with old white guys running for the Presidency.

Still others were just there to ask the primary question: Is it free?

The from-all-sides bashing this idea is getting will set a precedent for the future Bernie flavors. Ben and Jerry better get ready to lose some money.
