Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) wants the word “alien” and the term “illegal alien” taken out of the government’s legal code. The congressman is arguing that the words work to “demonetize and dehumanize the migrant community.”
“Words matter. It’s vital that we respect the dignity of immigrants fleeing violence and prosecution in our language. The words ‘alien’ and ‘illegal alien’ work to demonize and dehumanize the migrant community. They should have no place in our government’s description of human beings,” Castro said in a public statement this week.

He continued, “Immigrants come to our borders in good faith and work hard for the opportunity to achieve a better life for themselves and their family. Eliminating this language from government expression puts us one step closer to preserving their dignity and ensuring their safety.”
The Correcting Alienating Names in Government Act, also known as the CHANGE Act, suggests the elimination of “alien” and “illegal alien” from the Immigration and Nationality Act. The bill suggests replacing the words with “foreign national” and “undocumented foreign national.”
Castro, whose twin brother is one of many Democrats trying to get the party’s nomination to run against Donald Trump for the presidency in 2020, is not the first Democrat to take issue with the term “illegal alien.”
“No one is an ‘alien.’ This is family separation on a massive scale,” Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) tweeted recently. “Dehumanizing immigrants and tearing apart families will not make us any stronger. It will only destroy lives, traumatize children, and make our country less safe.”
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) believes that no one is “illegal.”

“First, no one is illegal. That term is derogatory now because it dehumanizes people. You can say any other forms of maybe ‘coming in without any regulations’ or so forth, but the use of ‘illegal’ is disrespectful and I ask my colleagues to try in so many ways to not dehumanize our immigrant neighbors who are trying to come in for safe haven,” she said during a House committee hearing earlier this month.
Both Tlaib and Omar have been verbally feuding with President Donald Trump in recent days.
This recent move by Castro is only the latest sign that the Democrat Party is losing touch with the American people. A June Rasmussen poll asked people whether referring to those who come into the country illegally as “illegal immigrants” was offensive. Only 26 percent of respondents answered that it was.
This Orwellian bill from Castro is downright bizarre. He is a member of Congress and officials have been begging Congress to make some sort of forward progress on the issue of illegal immigration. Members of Congress have done little more than complain about the conditions in migrant detention centers, all the while ignoring the fact that they have the most power to do something meaningful to secure the border, support the president and make it so we aren’t using a system that is severely overworked.
Castro needs to get his priorities straight.
