Planned Parenthood vows to forgo federal funds rather than play by Trump’s new rules

Planned Parenthood is so passionate about killing babies that it will forgo millions of dollars in federal funds rather than comply with new Trump administration rules that ban the group from referring women for abortions.

By rejecting the federal funds, Planned Parenthood can continue to refer women for abortions. It will draw on “emergency funds” (most likely provided by US taxpayers) to continue offering abortion services.

The Maine “Family Planning” account tweeted:  “We announced today that, after nearly 50 years as Maine’s Title X grantee, we will withdraw from the program rather than comply with the Trump-Pence Gag Rule. We won’t compromise on care or medical ethics. Our clinics are open and we are providing services just as we always have.”

Under the Trump Administration’s new rule called the “Protect Life Rule,” clinics will no longer be eligible for Title X Family Planning funds if they are connected with abortion providers.

The decision to reject the federal funds comes shortly after the Trump administration told Title X grantees that it would enforce a ban on abortion referrals. That means hundreds of abortion clinics will soon have to decide whether they will follow the new rules or reject federal funding for abortions for low-income women.

“Other clinics may not have the fundraising ability that Planned Parenthood has and will either have to take the funding or will have to cut services or hours,” said Alina Salganicoff, senior vice president at the Kaiser Family Foundation.

The new rules could impact more than 1,000 abortion service centers. “This will affect different communities in very different ways,” Salganicoff said. “Some communities will be left without a family-planning provider, and the burden will be on the women and the clients.”

President Trump and anti-abortion groups say that abortion providers should not receive any federal funding. Not surprisingly, Democrats have slammed the Trump administration’s change in Title X funding as an “outrageous assault” on women’s health care and effectively a “domestic gag rule.”

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said in a statement: “The Trump Administration’s Gag Rule strikes a staggering blow to women’s basic health rights. This outrageous assault on the health care of vulnerable and underserved women and families would choke off their access to affordable contraception, critical health information and preventive health care, gravely undermining the health and strength of America.”
