Poll shows most liberals support census citizenship question, yet Dems still resist

The 2020 presidential pool might want to take note, over half of Americans believe that “Are you a citizen of the United States” should be included on the census. Despite the protestations from Democrats who decry it as “racist,” a new poll reveals that 53% of people believe that the question needs to be asked. This from left-leaning pollsters The Economist/YouGov, to boot!

“Do you think the federal government should or should not ask people whether they are American citizens as part of the 2020 census?” A fairly basic question that – under normal circumstances and in a less polarized political climate – would be totally non-controversial. Seriously, what country doesn’t have the right to know who is living on its land and utilizing its resources?

The responses to the question were stark, with 53% believing that the question should be included. 32% of respondents thought that it should not be included, and 14% were undecided.

The question was asked of 1500 Americans who appeared to lean more to the left than your average sampling. The Daily Wire’s Hank Berrien explains why these results are so important:

To give an indication of just how left-leaning the respondents surveyed were, when asked what they thought of the nine Supreme Court justices, the justices gaining far and away the highest approval ratings were leftists Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor, while the conservative justices lagged far behind; 53% of respondents said Roe v. Wade should not be overturned; 45% of respondents opposed President Trump’s policies while only 33% approved, and most tellingly, 37% said they would vote in their state’s Democratic Primary this year with only 27% saying the same of voting in their state’s GOP primary. 43% of respondents said they would vote for whomever the Democratic presidential nominee will be in 2020 as opposed to 34% who would vote for President Trump.

This is significant in that it shows even liberals are in agreement with the president regarding the controversial citizenship question. It raises the question: What are Democrat congresspeople afraid of? Perhaps they believe that if Americans learn the exact number of illegal aliens in the country, they’ll be less likely to support socialist policies that would benefit them? Maybe it’s just the result of 2 years of nothing but knee-jerk reactions to everything Trump supports, regardless of how the American people feel about it?

Rashida Tlaib went as far as to accuse supporters of the question of not wanting “communities like hers” represented in Congress.

“This is about whether or not we as a country want to count every single person, no matter their status and so forth. But doing this, this is political motivation, this is very racialized,” she whined.

“This is because you don’t want communities like mine being represented here in this chamber equally,” she continued her rant. “This is about that. And it really, it breaks my heart.”

Whatever the motivation, Democrats need to swallow their pride and vote with their people, not with their anger. Ultimately, that is what being an elected official is about.
