House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is calling for Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta to hand in his resignation over his role in what she called an “unconscionable agreement” with Jeffrey Epstein in 2008. She also made the accusation that President Trump knew of Epstein’s controversial plea deal when he nominated him to his current post in the administration in 2017.

Acosta was a U.S. Attorney in Miami in 2008 and helped arrange the deal that has been ridiculed as too lenient, given the fact that Epstein was facing life in prison for sex crimes involving underage girls. The agreement resulted in Epstein serving only 13 months behind bars, while being able to leave prison to go to work.

Several dozen girls are known to have been involved in the original case and at least 30 were never notified of the arranged deal with their assailant.

The Speaker provided no evidence that Trump was aware of Acosta’s role in the Epstein case.

A judge in February ruled that federal prosecutors acted unlawfully when they struck a plea deal with Epstein over what would now be classified as “zero tolerance” crimes, to include sex trafficking.

“Particularly problematic was the Government’s decision to conceal the existence of the [agreement] and mislead the victims to believe that federal prosecution was still a possibility,” the judge wrote in that February ruling. The White House issued a statement at the time that they were looking into the situation, and when asked about it, Trump told reporters, “I don’t know much about it. He’s done a great job as labor secretary. That seems like a long time ago. I know he’s been a fantastic labor secretary. That’s all I can tell you about it.”

Since the current arrest and indictment of Epstein, there have been calls from many Democrats for Acosta to step down, as well as some conservatives.

The former prosecutor has said that the reason he signed the deal was that if he had not, Epstein could have walked away, given the fact that he had the best attorneys money could buy. Acosta said he wanted Epstein to serve some time.

More charges to come

Former Assistant FBI Director Chris Swecker told Fox News on Monday that he believes the latest federal indictment of Epstein is a “placeholder” for prosecutors as they prepare a much larger “superseding” indictment.

The charges unsealed on Monday allege sex trafficking and sex trafficking conspiracy. The prosecution alleges the now 66-year-old billionaire hedge fund manager of preying on victims as young as 14 and that he allegedly ran a “vast network” between 2002 and at least 2005. Appearing in court, Epstein pleaded not guilty.

Swecker said Monday’s two-count indictment was intended to get Epstein “off the street” as fast as possible, as his criminal conduct “was ongoing, perhaps.”

“That plea deal should never have happened,” said Swecker. “This is a zero-tolerance crime now and it should have been a zero-tolerance crime back then.”

Fox News’ Steve Hilton in December called for Acosta to step down and is doing so now again, saying, “Well, the skeleton in Acosta’s closet is back in the public eye following Epstein’s arrest this weekend on charges of sex trafficking. So will we finally see some accountability from Alex Acosta?  In my view, it really is time for him to go.”

In a discussion Hilton with former Rep. Jason Chaffetz and Trump 2020 Senior Adviser Katrina Pierson on Sunday, the three talked about the disturbing case of Epstein and the problems of Acosta’s role in the injustice of the plea deal.

“Every time I’ve seen Donald Trump in action when there has been a flare up, and there has been something where somebody has gone over the line, the President has taken care of this,” Chaffetz added. “I would be surprised in this case, if the President allowed it to continue and fester.”
