Controversial independent journalist Tommy Robinson is pleading with President Donald Trump to grant him political asylum within the United States.
“In desperation, I’m making the appeal to President Trump urging him to get his lawyers and his team to look into my case. I’ve already been unlawfully imprisoned, now I’ve been convicted — not by a jury of peers — but the government that got me through a back door. I’ve been convicted for journalism,” Robinson told The Gateway Pundit on Monday.
He added, “I seek political asylum because I believe that in two days time I’ll be sent to prison to be murdered by a government who oppose and have taken our freedoms away.”
Robinson also made his plea on “The Alex Jones Show” and he is reportedly appearing on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” this week.
Robinson got himself into hot water for livestreaming defendants in a 2018 criminal trial. The Leeds case involved men accused of the sexual exploitation of young girls. Robinson filmed and uploaded his content to social media, which multiple judges found to be a violation of reporting restrictions on the trial. The maximum sentence for Robinson is two years in prison.
Robinson already spent 10 weeks behind bars for his act, but he was released after a successful appeal.
Despite the successful appeal, The Court of Appeal left the option to try Robinson again and Attorney General Geoffrey Cox, the government’s chief legal adviser, decided to start contempt proceedings against the man.
“Posting material online that breaches reporting restrictions or risks prejudicing legal proceedings is a very serious matter and this is reflected in the Court’s decision today,” Cox said in a public statement.
He added, “I would urge everyone to think carefully about whether their social media posts could amount to contempt of court.”
Robinson’s sentencing will take place at a later date, but he wants to avoid that altogether.
Robinson previously spoke about his time in prison and said he lost 40 pounds in only three months due to the limited supply of food he was allowed. He said he survived on fruit and cans of tuna.
Robinson, an outspoken critic of Islam, was also previously put in a prison with a high Muslim population, which he believes was done on purpose. He said his cell had to be closed off because people were spitting on him and throwing feces into it. Robinson said he was also told that his family would be attacked with acid while he was behind bars.
Robinson believes a new prison sentence will be equal to a death sentence for him.
““I feel like I’m two days away from being sentenced to death by the U.K. for journalism,” Robinson told “The Alex Jones Show” on Monday.
“I need evacuation out of this country,” he added. Robinson said the same “dark forces” trying to silence him in the United Kingdom are at work in the United States.
Robinson has requested political asylum for himself and his family. Trump’s administration has yet to respond to the request.
