A new criminal case involving Florida-based billionaire Jeffrey Epstein reportedly has a familiar name among the group of prosecutors
Maurene Comey, daughter of fired FBI Director James Comey, will be one of the prosecutors in the case against the wealthy financier and registered sex offender who was arrested on Saturday on new sex trafficking charges involving underage girls, a source confirmed to CNN.
US prosecutors in Manhattan brought the charges against Epstein Saturday on alleged sex trafficking crimes that occurred between 2002 and 2005 in both New York and Palm Beach, Florida.

The new case against Epstein, who previously was only sentenced to 13 months in prison more than a decade ago, will be handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York along with its public corruption unit and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Comey is an assistant US attorney in the Southern District of New York, the same position held by her father before he became the U.S. Deputy Attorney General under former President George W. Bush. In her position, which she has held since 2015, the daughter of the fired FBI chief has worked on cases involving embezzlement, obstruction of justice and racketeering.

In 2017, Comey served with a team of New York prosecutors in a case against the former treasurer of the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department who pleaded guilty to wire fraud, obstruction of justice, false statements and tax in embezzling nearly $6 million of fire department funds.
Comey was part of the SDNY’s White Plains office that charged a former union president with embezzlement of union funds, mail fraud, and making false statements to the Department of Labor in 2016. Earlier this year, she was also one of the prosecutors in a case of racketeering conspiracy involving a gang member.
After attending the College of William and Mary where she graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in History & Music, Comey went on to Harvard Law School, according to her LinkedIn profile.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, with a staff of about 220 assistant U.S. attorneys including Comey, has been investigating the Trump Organization and President Trump’s tax returns.

A federal appeals court ruled last week to unseal all the documents related to Epstein’s case, a move that could spell trouble for many of the billionaire’s high-profile friends, including former President Bill Clinton.

And with the involvement of the SDNY’s public corruption unit, legal experts believe Epstein could also face charges on tax-related crimes as well as money laundering and public corruption.
“Who knows?” trial analyst Gene Rossi told Law & Crime. “The sky’s the limit.”
