Nunes points out a few things fishy about upcoming Mueller testimony plans

Rep. Devin Nunes thinks there is something “off” about Robert Mueller’s upcoming testimony to Congress.

The California Republican believes the former special counsel “could throw a monkey wrench” into everything as he speaks with lawmakers in public testimony before the House Intelligence and Judiciary committees on July 17.

Nunes described Mueller as a “bad penny,” telling Fox News host Jeanine Pirro that “he just won’t go away” during a recent appearance on “Justice with Judge Jeanine.”

“There are two trains of thought out there. One is that he’s just not going to say anything, which is very possible,” the House Intelligence Committee ranking member said. “But it’s also very possible too that he could throw a monkey wrench in things.”

The congressman noted what he found questionable as well as sharing his concern over what one of Mueller’s top prosecutors will be testifying behind closed doors.

“Now what’s off about this is — supposedly he’s only agreed to testify for four hours. Four hours with the House Intelligence Committee and the House Judiciary Committee is not enough time to get everyone’s questions in,” Nunes explained.

“In addition, people should know he’s not willing to testify as of now behind closed doors and he’s supposedly going to send in Andrew Weissmann and his team of geniuses that came up with these conspiracy theories,” he added. “And that’s not going to even be translated. So stay tuned.”

Mueller agreed to public testimony following subpoenas after he had previously indicated he did not want to testify about his completed Russian investigation and the report he issued. House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff told CNN last week that the former special counsel was “deeply reluctant” to comply with the subpoena.

“There is no limitation on confining his testimony to the four corners of the report. That may be his desire, but Congress has questions that go beyond the report,” the  California Democrat said.

“My take on that, congressman, is be careful what you wish for,” Pirro said, noting that if Schiff and the Democrats want Mueller to go beyond the report, that “allows you Republicans to get into when, where, how, why.”

Nunes expressed the surprising take that he actually agreed with Schiff.

“If Mueller comes in and testifies, he has to answer every question that members of Congress have for him. And he should, if he thinks it’s classified and somehow gets into some classified information, then he needs to go down into a secure area so we can ask him the questions there on the record,” Nunes told Pirro.

The FBI’s claims that the investigation started in July 2016 is “a total lie,” the congressman added.

“They’ve been lying to Congress. They’ve been misleading the American people, and I’m going to ask that question or at least me or somebody on my committee is going to ask that question of Bob Mueller when the investigation actually began spying on the Trump campaign,” he said.

Some have expressed concerns over what Schiff has called an “executive session” with senior members of Mueller’s staff including Andrew Weissmann, known as Mueller’s “pitbull, ” who could do real “damage” to President Trump, according to Joe DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia.

“Well, Jerry Nadler, the mumbler, is going to be questioning Bob Mueller, the cadaver. If you’ve watched Mueller, he barely functions. His testimony is going to be basically worthless. He may want to answer some of the questions and he may even try to go beyond the four corners,” diGenova told Fox Business’ Lou Dobbs last week.

“The real damage is going to be done the next day when they have testimony from Weissmann and his aides which will be done in executive session with unlimited questioning,” he added. “That’s when the damage to the president is going to be done. Bob Mueller is nothing more than a figurehead. This has always been the Weissmann investigation, and it’ll be the Weissmann testimony.”
