Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is calling for “legal action” against the mayor of Portland, Oregon following a brutal attack against conservative journalist Andy Ngo at an Antifa protest on Saturday.
“To federal law enforcement: investigate & bring legal action against a Mayor who has, for political reasons, ordered his police officers to let citizens be attacked by domestic terrorists,” Cruz tweeted on Sunday.

Portland, Oregon Mayor Ted Wheeler has faced heavy criticism following the assault on Quillette editor Andy Ngo. In a livestream following his attack Ngo can be heard asking police officers, “Where the hell were all of you?”
Antifa protests have a history of violence against journalists — as even CNN host Jake Tapper has pointed out — and Ngo said before he was set to cover the Saturday event that he was concerned for his safety.
“I am nervous about tomorrow’s Portland antifa rally. They’re promising ‘physical confrontation’ & have singled me out to be assaulted. I went on Tucker Carlson last year to explain why I think they’re doing this: They’re seeking meaning through violence,” he tweeted before Saturday’s rally.

Wheeler was previously accused of having a hands-off approach to Antifa, a position he defended in October of last year.
“This is the story of Goldilocks and the two bears. The porridge is either too hot or it’s too cold,” Wheeler told reporters following criticisms lobbed against him and the city’s police for not stopping Antifa members from blocking streets and harassing drivers during their protests.
The mayor added, “At any given moment in this city, the police are criticized for being heavy-handed and intervening too quickly, or they’re being criticized for being standoffish and not intervening quickly enough.”
Video and images captured from Saturday’s protest show that police officers themselves were the victims of harassment and assault, but still nothing serious was done to cool down the event. Police did not order the protesters to disperse until after Ngo was assaulted.

Even after police labeled the protest an “unlawful assembly” only three people were arrested, according to KPTV.
“PPB advising this is now a civil disturbance and unlawful assembly. If you do not disperse, you are subject to arrest or use of force,” the Portland Police Department tweeted about the Antifa protest before making arrests.

While Ngo is still waiting for some sign of support from the city, he has received plenty of online backing.
Conservative commentator Michelle Malkin set up a GoFundMe campaign to help Ngo — who said his camera equipment was stolen at the rally — and it has raised over 100,000 dollars as of this writing.
Malkin blasted Portland, Oregon as a “sanctuary city for Antifa” in a scathing tweet.
“Portland: Sanctuary city for illegal aliens. Sanctuary city for Antifa terrorists,” she tweeted. The tweet was in response to Cruz’s call for a federal investigation into the city’s mayor.

Ngo was assaulted with milkshake cups that may have been filled with quick-drying cement. Ngo was hospitalized after the attack and was reportedly suffering from a brain bleed.
