De Blasio blasted as ‘clueless’ after quoting Che Guevara in Miami, Florida

Of all the Democrats hoping to challenge Donald Trump for the presidency in 2020, New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio is by far the most embarrassing — and that’s really saying something when you consider the fact that he’s facing off against people like Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Beto O’Rourke and Joe Biden.

After taking part in Wednesday night’s Democratic presidential primary debate — where he once again made a fool of himself — De Blasio spent part of his Thursday speaking to Miami International Airport workers at a union rally in Miami, Florida.

While speaking to the workers, De Blasio did something pretty horrific — even for him. The mayor quoted Che Guevara, a murderous Cuban revolutionary who became a top lieutenant under dictator Fidel Castro. The image of Guevara has become popular among far leftists in recent years for inexplicable reasons.

“The eyes of the world are on this airport, the eyes of the world are on Miami-Dade,” De Blasio said to the crowd. Before introducing the next speaker, the New York City mayor added, “Hasta la victoria, siempre.”

The phrase roughly translates to “ever on to victory!” and it is infamously attached to Guevara’s legacy. Raul Castro used the phrase on Cuban television when announcing the death of his brother, Fidel.

While the crowd cheered De Blasio on, the mayor has earned heavy criticism for quoting Guevara, especially while in Miami, a city where many Cubans fleeing the dictatorship of Cuba ended up immigrating to.

“Quoting a murderer responsible for death & oppression in communist Cuba and throughout Latin America is not acceptable. Please apologize,” Jose Javier Rodríguez, a Cuban state senator, tweeted about De Blasio’s speech. The state senator actually spoke at the same event as De Blasio, but left before the mayor spoke.

The Miami-Dade Democratic Party demanded an apology from De Blasio and others also condemned his choice of words.

“Mayor Bill DeBlasio does not speak for Floridians or the Florida Democratic Party and he would be wise to apologize,” Terrie Rizzo, Florida’s Democratic Party chairwoman, tweeted about De Blasio.

“I have no idea if he knew [the quote was associated with Guevara]. But it’s very disappointing, clearly,” State Sen. Annette Taddeo, a Colombian-American, said, according to the Miami Herald. “This is the problem that we run into all the time … The left has people that are just clueless as hell.”

De Blasio’s quote may have been him trying to catch up to the pandering standard set by other Democrats at Wednesday night’s debate. Beto O’Rourke and Cory Booker both earned plenty of backlash for attempting to answer questions in Spanish during the event.

De Blasio later took to Twitter to apologize for his comment and to claim he did not know the quote was from Che Guevara.

“I did not know the phrase I used in Miami today was associated with Che Guevara & I did not mean to offend anyone who heard it that way. I certainly apologize for not understanding that history,” he tweeted.

The apology was not met with warm responses from many.

“Gosnell” director and “Justified” star Nick Searcy — one of Hollywood’s few outspoken conservatives — told the New York City mayor that everyone already knew he was a communist, so there’s no need to apologize.

“Hey @billdeblasio: You think your mask slipped, Communist, but we’ve known what you are all along,” Searcy tweeted.
