Omarosa Manigault Newman is being sued by the Department of Justice for not filing financial disclosures required after she was fired from her Trump administration job.
President Trump’s former senior White House advisor was sued by the Justice Department Tuesday for failing to file the documents after multiple reminders following her firing in December 2017, CNBC reported.
“Notwithstanding the numerous attempts to obtain her compliance, Ms. Manigault Newman has not filed her termination financial disclosure report,” the lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., said.
Manigault Newman was told about filing the required documents after she was fired by then-White House chief of staff John Kelly. Failing to do so, the former contestant on “The Apprentice” was then allegedly reminded about to do so another seven times from January through March 2018, according to the lawsuit.
John Phillips, the attorney for Manigault Newman, has denied the claims made in the lawsuit which allege the former director of communications of the White House Office of Public Liaison violated the Ethics in Government Act, which is punishable by a fine of up to $50,000.
He accused the White House of denying his client access to the records she needs to file the financial disclosures, and also claimed the lawsuit is a retaliatory move by the administration.
“Once again, the White House chooses to abuse process and use the Department of Justice to carry out retaliation. The lawsuit alleges that Omarosa Manigault Newman ‘knowingly and willfully’ failed to file a report. This is untrue,” he said in a statement, according to CNBC.
“Omarosa Manigault Newman regularly kept records of this nature in her office at the White House. In order to provide a report, Omarosa Manigault Newman has repeatedly requested these and other documents which The White House and its Counsel’s Office seized at her termination,” he continued.
“We requested an extension until her documents could be returned. However, despite my client’s best efforts, the Department of Justice or the White House continues to withhold these documents, which are needed to complete the disclosure. As a further abuse of justice, the Trump Administration provided media with a Complaint before my client was served or even had a chance to read it,” Phillips added in the statement.
“Omarosa Manigault Newman cannot even get a straight answer about the amount of materials wrongfully possessed. This is premature, retaliatory and yet another attempt to silence a dissenting voice,” he concluded.
Manigault Newman was once a staunch supporter of the president’s but went on to be a vocal critic after her firing.
She released a book titled, “Unhinged: An Insider’s Account of the Trump White House” last year in which she accused Trump of being a “racist” and of using various racial slurs. She also released a secret recording of Kelly firing her from the White House on NBC’s “Meet the Press” last year.

An arbitration action against Manigault Newman was filed by Trump’s presidential campaign last year, accusing her of breaking a nondisclosure agreement from her work during the 2016 election campaign.
