Police detective interrupts press conference to tackle fleeing suspect in crazy video

You can argue a lot of bad comes out of the internet, but you can argue that a lot of good comes out too. One good aspect is the occasional viral video that makes our jaws collectively drop to the floor, makes us smile or reminds us that there are good guys in the world taking the bad head on, sometimes with a rugby-style tackle.

A police detective is earning praise online after he abruptly stopped a press conference to take down a suspect fleeing behind him.

Detective Senior Sergeant Daren Edwards was talking to reporters outside the Maroochydore Magistrates’ Court in Queensland on Wednesday when he was distracted by yelling coming from behind him.

“Run!” a man is heard screaming. Edwards turns to find out what’s happening and he sees one man chasing after another. Edwards jumps into action and intercepts the fleeing suspect. He drops his shoulder and tackles the man low, immediately bringing him to the ground.

“He’s been inappropriate to my daughter,” the man who was chasing the other is heard saying as Edwards holds the suspect to the ground. Edwards can be seen telling the father to remain calm.

The man who was tackled has yet to be identified, but he was arrested and taken into police custody after Edwards detained him.

Edwards rejoined the gathered press with a wound visible on his head, but he seemed completely calm after the altercation.

“Look it’s just one of those things you know,” he said.

Edwards went on to explain that the man he chased had allegedly made comments to a young woman who then told her father, who was understandably upset. To make things extra strange, the man had apparently just been released from police custody when he made the comments.

“Obviously the man had just been released and a young lady walking down the street had comments made to her which were relayed to her father which obviously provoked her father,” Edwards said. The detective said the man was being arrested for “further public nuisance.”

If Edwards looked a bit like an athlete in the video, that’s because he is one. The man previously played for Redcliffe Dolphins, an Australian rugby team.

Edwards told The Sunshine Coast Daily that his takedown of the suspect was a “good tackle.”

“I dropped the shoulder and tackled him,” Edwards said. “Right around the knees, it dropped him.”

People from all over the world have been praising Edward’s quick reaction time and his willingness to get involved in a situation he could have easily avoided.

“Brilliant cover defense. J Raper-like. Cut off the angle and got in low to ensure there was no chance of the ball-runner brushing him off. Excellent effort,” wrote one Twitter user in reaction.

Another commented, “Incredible tackle.”

And another replied, “Great form tackle! Closed in, kept his feet moving, head across the ball carrier and went near leg near shoulder with a great wrap up. Nobody’s gonna be able to break that tackle.”
