Florida’s Orlando Sentinel endorses ‘not Donald Trump’ for president ahead of ‘mother of all rallies’

Before President Donald Trump could announce his reelection campaign in front of tens of thousands of fans in Orlando, Florida, a local paper decided it was a good time to take a shot at the man.

The Orlando Sentinel made an official endorsement for the 2020 election, though they have not chosen one specific person to support. The editorial board instead just said to vote for anyone but Trump.

“Some readers will wonder how we could possibly eliminate a candidate so far before an election, and before knowing the identity of his opponent,” a Tuesday editorial said. “Because there’s no point pretending we would ever recommend that readers vote for Trump.”

The editorial went on to say, “After 2 1/2 years we’ve seen enough. Enough of the chaos, the division, the schoolyard insults, the self-aggrandizement, the corruption, and especially the lies.”

The fact that childish drivel like this was published in what is supposed to be a respectable newspaper is just sad.

The Sentinel has endorsed both Republicans and Democrats in the past, though they have mostly stuck to Republicans. They previously endorsed John Kerry in 2004 when he was running against George W. Bush, Barack Obama in 2008 when he was running against John McCain, Mitt Romney in 2012 when he was running against Obama, and Hillary Clinton in 2016 when she was obviously running against Trump.

What makes the Orlando Sentinel’s “endorsement” even more embarrassing is they are also hyping Trump’s upcoming rally in an effort to sell papers.

As many as 100,000 people are expected to be attending Tuesday night’s event and many of them were posted up a full day before the event was even set to kickoff. It’s clearly the most exciting political rally of any regarding the 2020 election so far, but the Sentinel acknowledged that fact in an odd way.

“THE MOTHER OF ALL RALLIES’ is TONIGHT!” read their headline about the event.

The headline was accompanied by a picture of two Trump supporters sitting under an umbrella waiting for the rally to begin. By showing only these two people, some have said the Sentinel is trying to poke fun at the hype surrounding Trump’s rally. This would be misleading since tens of thousands of people are expected to attend and there are a lot more than two people who have waited in the street in anticipation.

If they are not trying to be misleading then the Sentinel is still in a predicament because they would be hyping a political rally to sell papers while also discrediting the man putting on the rally in the same breath.

Either way, the Sentinel has embarrassed themselves. Check out the headline and picture below:

Social media users naturally scratched their heads at the Sentinel’s headline.

“Y’all should really read more of what the Orlando Sentinel put out today… it might be enlightening,” one user wrote to the Official Trump Team Twitter account which posted the headline.

Another responded, “The same Sentinel that said they will not endorse Trump.”

And another said, “Trump haters pls step out, MAGA train is unstoppable and the true Americans are enjoying the ride.”
