Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum praised President Donald Trump’s “disruptive force” in office and noted how much he has done for the Republican agenda.

The former Pennsylvania Republican and current political commentator for CNN took the lone position of defending Trump during a panel discussion on CNN’s “State of the Union with Jake Tapper” on Sunday.

Santorum’s comments followed criticism of Trump by former Clinton campaign senior adviser, Karen Finney, who accused Trump of trying to “change the presidency” with the “idea that he can do pretty much anything he wants.

Host Jake Tapper asked Finney and the panel to weigh in on the president’s comments during an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, declaring that he “was never going to fire Mueller.”

“I never suggested firing Mueller,” Trump said.

“He seems to govern as though he can pick and choose whatever laws or norms or rules he wants to follow or choose not to follow, and he’s wrong,” Finney said, adding that she found it “interesting” that the president was “reminding us” about Robert Mueller’s report and potential obstruction of justice.

Santorum, who served as the Pennsylvania GOP senator from 1995 to 2007, stepped in to counter the liberal’s argument and noted the “great job” that Trump was doing.

“I think we’ve seen several presidents pushing the envelope on presidential power, and certainly President Obama pushed the envelope on presidential power.  And I think Donald Trump is going along with that view of the presidency,” Santorum said.

“And I think he realizes, to be the disruptive force that he is –  and he is, whether it’s in politics or whether it’s a president – he’s a disruptive force. He’s someone who’s shaking things up and he’s going to push the limits of presidential power,” the former lawmaker added.

“And, again, from the standpoint of Republicans, he’s done a great job,” he argued. “He’s done a great job on pushing policies on regulations and the ability for conservative ideas to get advanced more than anybody –  more than George Bush, the Bushes combined. He’s been a great force.”

Former Democratic governor of Michigan, Jennifer Granholm jumped in with her two cents.

“He’s been a great force in taking lying to — making it an art form. He’s been a great force in saying that the president is above the law,” the Democrat said.
