Harris compares military fathers to illegal immigrants and criminals in strange Father’s Day post

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) sent out a message on Father’s Day that was a little misguided, to say the least.

In her message Harris told people to remember fathers who can’t be with their children on Father’s Day. She then named examples of situations where fathers would be separated from their kids on the holiday.

“Today I’m thinking of the fathers who can’t be with their children because they were ripped from their sons and daughters at the border. The fathers who can’t celebrate today because they can’t afford bail. The fathers who are deployed. Don’t forget them,” the senator tweeted. She followed the message by hashtagging “Father’s Day.”

To equate fathers trying to sneak their children across the border illegally or sitting in jail away from their kids to fathers who are serving their country is beyond bizarre.

Of course every person has an individual plight and most of those plights can in some way inspire empathy or sympathy, but equating the struggles of American servicemen to people who are alleged criminals or in the act of being criminals is ridiculous.

To be ripped from your children at the border, you must first be doing something illegal by sneaking into another country illegally. To have your children with you on top of that is to only put them at risk of the dangers you are in.

Sitting in jail because you can’t afford bail happens because you committed a crime or are caught up in a situation where you are at least being accused of one and it’s rather serious or you have a criminal record.

Being away from your children because you’re deployed happens because you made the selfless decision to dedicate your time to the American military. You are deployed doing a job your country has told you it needs done.

These three situations are incredibly different. For Harris to lump all of them together is not only misleading, it’s incredibly disrespectful to the military. How she can not see the difference between the situation’s is anyone’s guess.

Harris is, of course, one of the many Democrats currently campaigning to earn her party’s nomination to challenge Trump for the presidency in 2020. Grouping military fathers in with criminals and illegal immigrants seems like bad messaging for someone who hopes to one day be commander in chief though.

Many responded to Harris’ tweet by bemoaning her for making Father’s Day political.

“Just happy Father’s Day would be nice. Leave the politics out next time,” tweeted one user.

Another said, “Deployed fathers are last?”

Yet another wrote, “Next level pandering. Very impressive.”

“You are amazingly clueless,” added another.

Harris sent a Father’s Day message to her own husband, Douglas Emhoff, before she sent out her bizarre tweet. She said she will be dining on steak and homemade fries with him in celebration of the holiday, something that’s not even close to what deployed military fathers will be doing tonight. But detained fathers who are illegal immigrants and fathers sitting in jail also won’t enjoy nights that good, and that’s what really matters to Harris.
