Cindy Crawford, one of the most super of all supermodels, talked during a panel discussion hosted by WWD about her decision to share some nude images at the age of 53. Crawford called out those who try to shame older models for continuing to pose.
“We want to show women who are 53, and I think Christy just turned 50, that there’s still beauty in that,” Crawford said, mentioning fellow supermodel Christy Turlington. She also said that the images were “tasteful.”
“I remember some snarky person on Instagram — there seem to be a lot of those — posted something like, ‘Ah, why are you still doing those at your age?’ And I was like, is there an age where being nude isn’t beautiful? It’s just a different kind of beauty,” Crawford said during the discussion.
She also talked about how she takes care of herself to stay camera-ready. “Avoiding the sun, not smoking, drinking a lot of water, and getting enough sleep is key to looking and feeling good at any age,” she said.
In a recent Net-a-Porter interview, she commented on her nude shoot with photographer Russell James. “He asked me how I wanted to be photographed. ‘You could be as free or as not free as you wanted.’
“Part of the reason I wanted to do it was that I thought, at what age is being naked not beautiful anymore? Is there a sell-by date on us? I don’t look the same as I did at 20, 30 or even 40. If we take care of ourselves, why not? Am I frolicking on the beach in a string bikini? No. But there is a place where I want to feel beautiful naked, in my private life, with my husband,” said the iconic model and actress.
“[Russell] was tapping into that real place – not high heels, not a lot of makeup, not coy, just a real woman who doesn’t have clothes on. I look back at some of my old Playboy pictures and I think, ‘Why wasn’t I walking around naked all the time?’ I’m not getting younger. So I want to celebrate who I am today.”
The mother of two continues to work in the industry, not only in front of the camera maintaining the “Crawford brand,” but also managing a skincare company called Meaningful Beauty and a home decor brand. She is also guiding her children in their fledgling modeling careers. Son Presley is 19 and daughter Kaia is 17. Kaia, like her mother, is one of the most in-demand models out there, having recently walked for top designers during Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks.
“Kaia had some advantages,” Crawford said in the Net-a-Porter interview. “She is my daughter and people know that. But when people say that I bought her a cover of a magazine, I think, if I was going to buy a cover for someone, it would be me! If I could get someone into a fashion show, I would be getting it for myself.”
One thing that concerns Crawford is how the modeling business has changed due to the advent of social media. “I can’t believe how hateful people can be,” she told Net-a-Porter. “As much as people put garbage on my Instagram, it doesn’t bother me. But when they do it to my kids I think, grrr. But you’re not supposed to go after [the haters]. It’s shocking. We’re becoming more immune to it because people just lash out. We have to be so politically correct in one way. If you’re not famous, you can say the most hateful stuff. God forbid you [as a celebrity] offend the wrong person.”
