The recent shooting in Virginia Beach has a disturbing new ripple.

The shooting by a government employee named DeWayne Craddock left 11 victims dead. The shooter was also killed by police. One of the victims of the shooter, Kate Nixon, actually complained about the coworker who would end up being a murderer and she also expressed to her husband a desire to bring a gun to work for protection the night before the shooting, according to a family lawyer.

“Kate expressed to her husband concerns about this individual in particular, as well as one other person,” Nixon family attorney Kevin Martingayle told WHRV’s “HearSay with Cathy Lewis” radio show this week. “In fact, they had a discussion the night before about whether or not she should take a pistol and hide it in her handbag — and decided not to, ultimately, because there’s a policy apparently against having any kind of weapons that are concealed in the building.”

Virginia Beach city employees are prohibited from carrying “any weapon” on city property unless the carrying has been approved by a supervisor. Kate Nixon worked in a gun-free zone and she expressed to her husband the night before she was murdered that she wanted to protect herself at work from people concerning her, but she couldn’t because worked demanded she be unarmed.

Let that all sink in and it makes the events in Virginia Beach so much more tragic and painful to think about.

“The prohibition against possession of a weapon applies even if a member has a permit to carry a concealed weapon,” reads the city’s policy on prohibiting weapons.

Nixon’s family is calling for an independent investigation into the May 31 shooting and the events leading up to it and what could have been done differently.

“We’ve heard a lot of information out there suggesting there were a lot of concerns about the shooter well before this happened,” Martingayle told WHRV. “We need to know more about that. An outside investigation is the perfect vehicle to get to the truth. That’s it. This is a search for truth by a grieving family.”

Julie Hill, Director of the Communications Office at Virginia Beach, told Fox News that the City Council is voting soon on a bill to allow localities to prohibit the carrying of firearms in government buildings completely. If the bill passes then gun-free zones would be more heavily enforced with carrying a weapon being illegal, rather than just a policy violation for employees.

“There is an item on next week’s City Council meeting for the Council to discuss a resolution to support a bill to allow localities to prohibit the carrying of firearms in governmental buildings,” she said.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam has already called for further gun control in the wake of the shooting, which has earned him pats on the back from left-wing groups.

“The nation is watching,” Northam said at a press conference. “We must do more than give our thoughts and prayers. We must give Virginians the action they deserve.”

In a public statement, gun-control group Brady United “applauded [Northam’s] announcement, hailing it as an opportunity for Virginia legislators to take action to prevent the next mass shooting.”
