Monday night, Sean Hannity said that he has sources telling him that the long-awaited report by Inspector General Michael Horowitz could be released “any day now” and that “it may now have already been handed over to the attorney general.”

Horowitz, the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Justice, opened an investigation in March 2018 into whether the FBI abused the FISA court by relying on the discredited Steele dossier to obtain spy warrants against Carter Page and into related activities.

Information about the ongoing IG investigation has been sparse and tightly held by officials who are involved. However, reports from witnesses who have been interviewed by those in the IG office have said their impression is that investigators are looking to deeply undermine Steele’s work.

Investigative reporter Sara Carter told Hannity, “I think when people see Michael Horowitz’s report, there will be explosive information. Sean, this is an avalanche of information that is going to come out. Viewers are going to be astonished.”

Christopher Steele, a former MI6 officer, was hired in June 2016 by Fusion GPS–an opposition research firm that was trying to dig up dirt on the Trump campaign on behalf of the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign.

The infamous dossier consists of 17 memos originating between June 2016 and December 2016, alleging a “well-developed conspiracy” between Trump associates and the Kremlin.

Steele has refused to cooperate in the Inspector General’s efforts to get to the bottom of the issue.

At the time the Inspector General’s investigation was opened into FISA abuse more than 14 months ago, Horowitz said he was doing so at the request of then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Republican members of Congress. GOP lawmakers charged that the DOJ and FBI had abused the FISA process and misled the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court in their investigation and surveillance of Trump and his associates during the campaign and Trump’s administration.

Horowitz stated that his office would “examine the Justice Department’s and the FBI’s compliance with legal requirements, and with applicable DOJ and FBI policies and procedures, in applications filed with the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) relating to a certain U.S. person.” That “certain U.S. person” has been interpreted to be referring to Trump campaign associate Carter Page.

The IG also indicated it would “review information that was known to the DOJ and the FBI at the time the applications were filed from or about an alleged FBI confidential source. Additionally, the OIG will review the DOJ’s and FBI’s relationship and communications with the alleged source as they relate to the FISC applications.” The “alleged FBI confidential source” is said to be Steele.

Democrats have been opposed to the investigation and have defended the actions in question by the Obama-era DOJ and FBI.

“It is a shame that the Inspector General has to devote resources to investigate a conspiracy theory as fact-free, openly political, and thoroughly debunked as the President’s so-called ‘FISA abuse,'” Rep. Jerry Nadler said when the IG probe was started last year. “Any objective review of these claims should tell us what we already know — that the FBI was right, that there was sufficient evidence to continue investigating certain Trump campaign officials for their connections to the Russian government, and that the Republicans are desperate to distract from that investigation.”
