Virginia Governor Ralph Northam tweeted at the time that he was monitoring the situation.

In a press conference, police officials later confirmed the situation and said 12 people were killed, making this one of the deadliest mass shooting in some time.
Police said the shooter was deceased and said the shooter had been a longtime employee of the public utilities department. He was currently employed there when the shooting took place.
Gov. Northam called the event a “tragic day” for Virginia beach in a tweet and he said he was headed to Virginia Beach to directly monitor the situation.
“This is a tragic day for Virginia Beach and our entire Commonwealth. My heart breaks for the victims of this devastating shooting, their families, and all who loved them. I am on my way to Virginia Beach now and will be there within the hour,” he tweeted.

Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer said it was the “most devastating day in the history of Virginia Beach” during the press conference.
Visibly shaken by the news, Dyer said those killed and injured in the deadly shooting were and are “friends” and “coworkers.”
Chief of Police Jim Cervera then confirmed the deaths. He said there is more information that the police department will release when they feel it is “appropriate.”

Cervera said one of the people shot by the suspect was a Virginia Beach police officer, who was saved by his bulletproof vest. He said police were still in the process of identifying the rest of the victims. He also said he would not release the name of the suspect, but he confirmed it was a male and they know who he is.
He continued by saying that the shooter entered what is referred to as Building Two in a municipal building area and he began “indiscriminately” shooting. He was soon engaged by police. He added that the scene is now “secure.” Virginia Beach police are currently being assisted in their investigation by the FBI.
Answering questions from the press, Cervera said the shooting took place across multiple floors, but he does not know how long it took place. He added that the motivations are currently being investigated.
Councilman Aaron Rouse also made a statement during the press conference and said the deadly shooting will not “define” Virginia Beach.
“This day will not define Virginia Beach,” he said. “We as citizens will define [Virginia Beach] in our response.”
