A California high school apologized this week for “culturally insensitive” yearbook photos that showed Spanish teachers wearing ponchos, sombreros, and fake handlebar mustaches. Not only that, but the French teacher’s photo showed her wearing a black beret, sunglasses, and pearls.
Wearing stereotypical garb is a crime for these poor misguided souls at San Pasqual High School in Escondido, California.
A few media outlets reported that some students and parents were “outraged” though none of those folks have been quoted.
The teachers’ names featured the titles Señor and Señora while the French teacher was addressed, Madame.
The school district’s mea culpa statement stated that the photos, taken at the beginning of the school year for the teachers’ ID photos were “culturally insensitive and in poor judgment.”
Principal Martin Casas said that the school takes pride in its “rich history and diversity.” It is our intent to use this situation as a tool to remind students, as well as staff, to remember the impacts of their words and actions,” he said in a statement. “We are committed to continuing our efforts to ensure all students, families and staff feel welcome and valued.”

What is left to be said about stupidity like this that has infected every niche and corner of America? It’s unclear if anyone was actually offended by the pictures. More likely it was suddenly recognized by some lefty as a training opportunity to further shrink some pale-skinned egos.
High school yearbooks are gold mines today for serial offendees in search of supposedly abhorrent nuggets.
According to Fox 5, “Some parents said they didn’t find it offensive while others said they didn’t know how to feel.” Obviously those are the ones who can be turned.
“They could be offensive if they’re making fun of us. But it could be something honorable if they’re trying to do honor to the Mexican culture,” said Martin Reyes, whose son goes to San Pasqual. “It would be better without the big mustache and hats.”
“It doesn’t look offensive to me,” parent Merced Juarez, who is Hispanic, told NBC 7 of San Diego. She added that her son’s teacher is “very good” and “strict with them, because she wanted them to learn Spanish.”
Parent and former San Pasqual High School student Tania Marin said she didn’t find the pictures to be harmful. “I think that lately everything is so sensitive,” she told NBC 7. “If they were teaching Russian and they had a Russian hat, I would find it hilarious.”
