Pelosi sparks backlash and speculation when she doubles down on Trump’s ‘unprecedented cover-up campaign’

WASHINGTON, DC - MAY 09: U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) answers questions during a press conference at the U.S. Capitol on May 09, 2019 in Washington, DC. During the press conference Pelosi said the U.S. is in a "constitutional crisis" and warned that House Democrats may find additional members of the Trump administration in contempt of congress for not complying with congressional subpoenas. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has doubled down on her highly conspiratorial and unsubstantiated claim that President Donald Trump is engaged in some sort of clandestine “cover-up.”

“Congress’s constitutional authority and responsibility to conduct oversight of the executive branch have been reaffirmed — again and again,” she said in a statement Wednesday evening. “Sadly, the President continues to defy Congress’s authority, and engage in an unprecedented cover-up campaign of the facts.”

It’s unclear what mysterious facts the president, who even the media admit has been more transparent than America’s former presidents, is attempting to “cover-up.”

“Congress has a clear, urgent duty to uncover the truth for the American people on the issues that matter in their lives: from corruption to the Administration’s sabotage of families’ health care to its cruel family separation policy to its welcoming of foreign interference in our elections.”

“This is about patriotism, not politics. The President must honor the Constitution and the rule of law, and provide the information we need to find the truth for the American people. We will continue to follow the facts, wherever they take us,” she concluded.

She issued the statement hours after an Obama-appointed judge struck down an attempt by the president to stop his longtime lender, Deutsch Bank, from complying with a bizarre request from congressional Democrats for access to his personal financial records.

It’s unclear what Democrats think his financial records might unveil about him, or what these potential revelations about his life have to do with governing the country and taking care of the American people. If anything, the evidence strongly suggests that governing the country and taking care of the American people’s needs aren’t even priorities for congressional Democrats.

Earlier Wednesday, for instance, Pelosi preemptively ruined what was to have been a bipartisan discussion with Trump on infrastructure spending by issuing an inflammatory statement accusing him of a cover-up. This angered the president.

“We do believe that it’s important to follow the facts. We believe that no one is above the law, including the President of the United States. We believe the President of the United States is engaged in a cover-up. In a cover-up,” she said following a private meeting with the Democrat caucus.

The topic of the meeting had been impeachment. Congressional Democrats remain convinced that the president either colluded with Russian operatives to affect the outcome of the 2016 presidential election and/or obstructed justice to prevent special counsel Robert Mueller from uncovering the facts. Except that the actual facts have already shown neither of these things happened.

Released last month, Mueller’s report spelled out in explicit detail that “the evidence does not establish that the President was involved in an underlying crime related to Russian election interference.”

And given that he’d committed no crime and therefore had nothing to hide — plus the fact that he’d complied with every single one of the special counsel’s requests — he, therefore, didn’t obstruct justice either, according to a post-Mueller-report ruling by the Justice Department.

A number of blue check mark social media users tried Wednesday evening to point these facts out to Pelosi on Twitter, though chances are they fell on deaf ears:

Regarding the latter tweet, congressional Democrats have repeatedly spoken out against Attorney General Bill Barr’s investigation into the origins of the Russia probe.

Though the AG simply wants to ascertain whether the probe — including the surveillance of the president’s 2016 election campaign officials — was predicated on legal justifications, congressional Democrats have acted as if he’s doing something wrong. It’s almost as if they are the ones trying to cover something up.
