‘Russia hoax’ turns funny: Barr approaches Pelosi and asks: ‘did you bring your handcuffs?’

Some Democrats may be calling for his arrest and the impeachment of the president, but Attorney General William Barr proved on Wednesday that he has a good humor about the whole thing.

Barr even joked with Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) about her recent accusations that he has broken the law and lied for the president when he ran into the congresswoman at an event on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol.

“As those seated on the platform waited for the president’s arrival in an adjacent tent, Attorney General Barr approached Speaker Pelosi, shook her hand and said loudly, ‘Madam Speaker, did you bring your handcuffs?'” an onlooker who witnessed the exchange told The Hill.

The exchange occurred while Barr and Pelosi were waiting for President Donald Trump to arrive at the 38th Annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service.

Barr’s joke even got a response out of Pelosi.

“The Speaker, not missing a beat, smiled and indicated to the attorney general that the House sergeant-at-arms was present at the ceremony should an arrest be necessary. The attorney general chuckled and walked away,” said the bystander.

The talk between Barr and Pelosi happened a week after the House Judiciary Committee voted to hold Barr in contempt after he failed to comply with a subpoena demanding the unredacted Mueller report and underlying materials. President Trump used executive privilege to prevent those files from being released.

Barr also recently refused to testify before the House Judiciary Committee. Barr had already testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee and objected to the fact that the members of the House Judiciary Committee would not be the only ones asking him questions.

Pelosi is one of a handful of Democrats who has refused to give up on the fantasy of arresting Barr and impeaching the president for obstruction of justice. After the results of the Mueller report were revealed and they cleared the president of collusion with Russia, Democrats immediately switched their tune and said the president should now be arrested for obstruction of justice. Mueller’s investigation, however, did not take a stand one way or another on obstruction charges and Barr has made it clear in public statements that there is not enough in the two-plus year investigation’s results to charge the president.

Pelosi recently joked in an interview with Washington Post Live that there isn’t enough room in the Capitol jail for the people she thinks should be imprisoned from the Trump administration.

“There is a little jail down in the basement of the Capitol, but if we were arresting all of the people in the administration, we would have an overcrowded jail situation,” she said. “And I’m not for that.”

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) and other Democrats have called for Barr to be arrested. Pelosi recently told the press that she believes Barr lied to Congress and he is not “above the law.”

“He lied to Congress. And if anybody else did that, it would be considered a crime,” Pelosi said last month. “Nobody is above the law. Not the president of the United States. Not the attorney general.”
