Mother’s Day apparently needed a fresh source of tasty outrage, so IHOP served up a hot steaming pile of it … at least in the minds of social-justice warriors with hair-trigger tempers. One site actually used this headline to describe the inhumanity of it all:
IHOP Traumatized the Internet With Its Mother’s Day Tweet of a Pancake-Filled Womb
That terror-conjuring banner came courtesy of ADWEEK. Gotta’ get those clicks, you know.
In reality, the tweet was harmless. Probably not the most socially conscious, as many pointed out, given the ongoing national debate about abortion bans.
If you have pancakes in your tum tum, does that make you a pancake mum mum? Happy Mother’s Day to ALL the moms out there! pic.twitter.com/wauH9sYvDb
— IHOP (@IHOP) May 12, 2019
The tweet read: “If you have pancakes in your tum tum, does that make you a pancake mum mum? Happy Mother’s Day to ALL the moms out there!” The accompanying image was a sonogram image showing a huge stack of pancakes.
A clearly outdated, once oft-quoted proverbial expression said: “There is no such thing as bad publicity.”
Wrong. In the age of social media stampedes, a tone-deaf company can get flattened … or pancaked, if you will, and IHOP has gotten a taste of that.
Some people have completely lost their sense of humor in 2019.

Can’t believe all the dummies saying this tweet was wrong. I thought it was quite funny. The PC folks out there need a sense of humor and need to just stop the nonsense.

No rest for the feary, teary, outrage-weary SJWs.
The holiday tweet by IHOP had some wondering if it meant IHOP would impregnate the unprotected.
Most responding tweets would be seen as far more offensive than the IHOP tweet, but that’s the game and how it’s played out there.
Carbo in Utero.Oh, NO!

Omg! Ppl get a life… you’re what’s wrong with America. This was a lighthearted comical tweet to say Happy Mothers Day… I’m sure IHOP thought let’s make a tweet that sends a message about abortion… Wow! Just wow

Given how much people are worried about women losing their reproductive rights right now, I’d say this is a pretty tonedeaf tweet.
Also, the stomach and the uterus are two completely separate organs.

Hire women in your PR/marketing teams. This is such a disaster you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Hi ihop, might want to refer to Dicks Sporting Goods earnings report to see if weighing in on political discussions is good for business. Just an idea.

Nothing funny about abortion no matter which side of the aisle you’re on.. but your tweet was still really funny ?

Seriously? I think your marketing team was smoking more than bacon to come up with this ! AND bad poetry to boot? Poe and Dickinson are rolling in their graves…
