Schiff threatens they might slap Trump, admin officials with hefty fines if they don’t comply with subpoenas

With Barack Obama having set the tone, weaponizing the institution of government to target political opponents may be here to stay.

Not willing to accept special counsel Robert Mueller finding no evidence of collusion with Russia, Democrats push forward with their efforts to undercover enough dirt to impeach President Donald Trump — or at least damage him enough to ensure defeat in 2020.

And they’re intent on doing all they can to intimidate Trump and his administration into complying with a number of investigations of the president — there are no less than FIVE Democrat-controlled House committees now targeting Trump.

The latest Democrat to flex his political muscles is Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the notorious Trump-hating chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, who made it clear Thursday he may fine Trump officials who refuse to comply with subpoenas, to include the president himself.

Speaking with Axios’ Mike Allen at a Friday morning newsmaker event, Schiff said the Pelosi-led House is considering reviving its inherent contempt power to impose hefty fines on Trump and administration officials to force them to obey subpoenas, according to ABC News.

“One thing we are considering … is whether we need to revive Congress’s inherent contempt power, such that we would have our own adjudication of the Congress and we’d levy fines on those who are not cooperating until they produce what they are compelled to produce,” Schiff said.

This follows Wednesday’s move to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt over his supposed lack of transparency, for complying with the law to protect grand jury testimony.

And Speaker Nancy Pelosi joking about arresting so many of President Trump’s aides that the Capitol jail isn’t larger enough to hold them all — this in response to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin refusing to produce Trump’s tax records.

And while Schiff likes the idea of jail, he prefers hitting them in the wallet — he’s a Democrat after all.

“Much as I like the visual of [throwing people in jail], I think it’s far more practical to consider levying individual fines on the person – not the office – until they comply,” he said.

“You could fine someone $25,000 a day until they comply,” Schiff added. “You can do that. We’re looking through the history and studying the law to make sure that we’re on solid ground.”

ABC News reported Congress hasn’t tried to enforce subpoenas through the “inherent contempt power” in nearly a century.

Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., chairman of the Oversight Committee, who is holding his own investigation, got in on the act this week by threatening to withhold salaries of Trump officials who refuse to cooperate.

Of course, it will be hard for these officials to pay Schiff’s steep fines if Cummings is holding their salaries!
