For all the animosity between President Donald Trump and CNN, one network reporter offered a refreshing and transparent change with a gesture of appreciation.
CNN White House reporter Betsy Klein took a moment to share a “personal note” on Twitter about a family friend battling brain cancer who was encouraged when she received a letter from the president and First Lady Melania Trump.
A “personal note for a gesture that doesn’t often make it onto WH twitter but should be recognized,” Klein tweeted Thursday, along with an image of the letter sent to a cancer-stricken friend named Lillie.
“Her mom says it brought her much joy after a very tough week,” Klein noted.
a personal note for a gesture that doesn’t often make it onto WH twitter but should be recognized: a dear family friend is battling brain cancer — she received this letter from @realDonaldTrump and @flotus today and her mom says it brought her much joy after a very tough week pic.twitter.com/8OjrtT16Zj

“We are so inspired by your strength and spirit as you take on cancer with uncommon courage,” the letter read. “You are in our heartfelt prayers.”
The president and first lady added, “Always remember that there are many people in your life who love you and support you,” and concluded with “We are all on Team Lillie!”
Klein’s tweet brought cheers from many on social media.
Thank you so much for sharing this. In the days when politics were more normal, these kinds of stories were front-and-centre in newspapers and newscasts, instead of being lost in the internet potpourri. May God bless Lillie, and bring her back to health completely.

It brought her joy and what a very important thing that is at this time in her life. Thinking of your friend and sending her thoughts of strength, healing and comfort during this courageous fight she is going through ??????

Know it was tough to share that since you work for CNN but mad respect you and God bless your friend and hope for a speedy recovery.

But it was not all positive feedback for Klein who unfortunately ended up with a Twitter feed filled with the left’s typical hatred for the president, even in a personal moment of someone’s struggle.
Nice gesture, but trump was handed this and just signed it. He could care less about it.

And for all the people with pre-existing conditions like cancer who he’s trying to strip from receiving care. Sorry unimpressed. But happy it brought her joy.

This does nothing to negate the fact that he is doing everything in his power to dismantle our democracy, undermine the Constitution, spread dissent, empower white supremacists, weaken our culture, and profit from his office.
You’re a journalist? Do your damned job.

The ridiculous thread of negativity focused repeatedly on the Trumps’ signatures, as if that were the important part of the tweet.
This IS nice and all, but is anyone else shocked to see that Melania has the exact same seismic handwriting as Donald? ?
— Rachel Spensieri (@RSpensieri) May 10, 2019
have you never heard of auto signatures? she received this from some poor intern stable located no where near 1600. how do you not understand this very basic idea?
— OMR (@DRmVonNostrand) May 10, 2019
I’m sure it was a template and all he did was sign his signature. Don’t get to excited ?
— get.in.formation. (@jenjo2016) May 10, 2019
I don’t buy the sincerity one bit.
And there has to be some major psychology behind the signatures that outsize the entire letter ?
— Coconuts&Sunshine (@FlaCoconuts) May 10, 2019
I don’t want to sound unkind, but if that’s really Melania’s “signature”, I have to ask … can she actually write her own name? I mean, my signature’s pretty bad, but it’s not just a single line going up and down like a crazy zig-zag.

Fortunately for Lillie, there were many responses to Klein’s tweet that not only wished her well but blasted the nasty commentators.
And a scroll through this thread leaves plenty examples of just how unnecessary ppl can be.
Hope Lillie recovers.

Exactly. Whether you like him or not this was a nice gesture. It’s amazing how intolerant the “tolerant” people in this country are. Cheers to a full recovery for Lillie.

How about we leave a moment that made a very awful situation just a little bit better alone. Jeez people, have a heart.

Sadly, there is a category of person that will ignore the plight of a cancer patient if there’s a chance to take a swipe at Trump.

What haters you all are ☹️
— Sloan Venables (@sloansterling) May 10, 2019
Prayers for Lillie and a sincerely nice gesture from our @POTUS and @FLOTUS ! I’m a cancer patient too and this would have lifted my spirits too! Thank you for sharing this despite the haters on here…#TRUMP2020Landside

Nice to see politics put aside for once. It’s unfortunate others have to use such a nice gesture to show their hatred for the First Family. Praying for Team Lillie.
