Gohmert sounds the alarm: ‘Attempted coup’ culprits must be held accountable, or we won’t ‘last much longer’

Rep. Louie Gohmert ripped the “attempted coup” against President Donald Trump and warned that “we’re not going to last much longer” if those behind it don’t go to jail.

The fiery Texas Republican blasted the Robert Mueller report and doubled down on previous criticisms he has leveled against the special counsel’s investigation of now-disproved Russian collusion with the Trump campaign in the 2016 election, telling Fox Business News host Lou Dobbs it “goes beyond the pale.”

“It’s bad enough that this thing has gone on for two and a half years since the election, much less now we’re finding out more and more was done before the election to try to keep Donald Trump from becoming president and then to remove him from office,” Gohmert said on “Lou Dobbs Tonight” Thursday.

“And the fact that even after the Mueller report has come out we still have Republicans that are pandering to those who can’t stand the president. It just goes beyond the pale,” he added.

Gohmert pointed to the latest Democrat narrative that the nation is in a “constitutional crisis” due to the refusal of administration officials to comply with Congressional subpoenas.

“You don’t find me agreeing very often with [Rep.] Jerry Nadler and Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi. But I do agree,” Gohmert said, referring to Nadler’s exaggerated claim made after the House Judiciary Committee voted to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt.

“We’ve talked for a long time about approaching a constitutional crisis. We are now in it,” Nadler said Wednesday after the vote against Barr who refused to comply with a subpoena for an unredacted report from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Pelosi echoed the words Thursday during a press conference in the Capitol as she said she agreed with the House Judiciary Committee Chairman “because the administration has decided that they’re not going to honor their oath of office.”

“There is definitely a constitutional crisis,” Gohmert told Dobbs on Thursday. “And it has everything to do with that attempted coup by leaders in the FBI, the DOJ, apparently in the Intel community, some there, maybe the top people.”

“And who knows, since we found out that President Obama wanted to know everything that was going on and we heard that, gee, we can thank President Obama, because he’s the one that set this whole thing in motion,” the member of the Republican House’s Freedom Caucus added. “It is outrageous.”

Gohmert warned that there has to be accountability “or this will not stop.”

I know as a former felony judge, one of the things that you consider in sentencing is the potential for discouraging future crimes. Something you’ve got to consider here. If people don’t go to prison for bringing this little experiment in self-government to the brink of disaster, then we’re not going to last much longer. That’s serious.”

Dobbs called out the Republican conference for being complicit in allowing the Mueller investigation to continue despite knowing there was no collusion.

Gohmert had addressed the “attempted coup” against Trump at Wednesday’s House Judiciary contempt proceedings against Barr, where he said he was “really here in mourning for a once-great Judiciary committee.”

“We’ve never had the Intelligence Community, the FBI, people at the top of the DOJ abusing their powers to create a case against a president where there was none. Where assets were actually used to try to set up members of the Trump campaign when there was no case. To try to create a case. We ought to be all over that. We ought to be demanding answers,” Gohmert said.

“This was an attempted coup, and history is bringing that into focus more and more clearly,” he added. “And what does this committee do about the abuses, the attempted coup? It comes in and decides, ‘We’re going to go after the attorney general who’s trying to clean up the mess.’”
