Two suspects are reportedly in custody.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about shots being fired at STEM School Highlands Ranch in the early afternoon. By the evening, police released more information about injuries.

The South Metro Fire Rescue also responded to the scene of the shooting, as well as the Denver office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Governor Jared Polis announced on Twitter that he is “monitoring the situation.”

“We are making all of our public safety resources available to assist the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department in their effort to secure the site and evacuate the students. We are monitoring the situation in real time. The heart of all Colorado is with the victims & their families,” he tweeted.

The STEM School Highlands Ranch is a public charter school. It reportedly has over 1,850 students enrolled. Grades range from kindergarten through high school.

The school is currently on lockdown and all school activities have been canceled.

Police said in a public statement to the media that injured students are all age 15 or above and some of them are in critical condition and in surgery. They would not reveal if there was gunfire exchanged with officers inside of the school as the situation is still “under investigation.”

Colorado is unfortunately home to a number of infamous mass shootings, including the 1999 Columbine shooting where two teenagers dressed in trench coats and murdered 13 people inside of their high school. They injured over 20 others.

Another shooter took the lives of 12 people at a screening of the movie “The Dark Knight Rises” in the city of Aurora in 2012. Over 70 others were injured in the shooting inside the Century 16 movie theater.

Both shootings made significant media waves and grabbed the attention of Americans. Both are also used as fuel in the fiery debate surrounding how exactly to stop future mass shootings.

This is a developing story. Check back for more updates…
