Pelosi bites back at Mitch McConnell saying ‘case closed’ on Mueller investigation: ‘I don’t think so’

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is ready to be done with the Mueller investigation, which is not pleasing many Democrats.

Taking to the Senate floor on Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader McConnell declared the Mueller investigation to be over.

“Case closed,” he announced.

The senator went on to compare Democrats wanting the investigation to continue to the movie “Groundhog Day,” where Bill Murray stars as a reporter forced to live the same day over and over again.

“This investigation went on for two years,” McConnell said. “It’s finally over.”

Before McConnell even gave his speech, the “case closed” bit was leaked to the public and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was already railing against the Kentucky senator for daring to want to move on from a two-plus year investigation that found no evidence of collusion between President Donald Trump and Russia.

Speaking at Cornell University Institute of Politics & Global Affairs’ “Inside Congress” event, Pelosi dismissed McConnell’s words about the Mueller investigation being “closed.”

“Today… on the floor of the Senate, Senator McConnell is reported to be saying … ‘case closed,’” Pelosi said.

She then repeated for emphasis, “Case. Closed.”

The congresswoman continued, “No, I don’t think so. I don’t think so. But it’s that same mentality that is just not about doing the right, getting results for the American people, but it’s who he [McConnell] is.”

Pelosi continued, “I know this is a non-partisan setting, but just as a matter of observation, that’s just not a fact. The case is not closed.”

Like many Democrats, Pelosi seems confused about the Mueller investigation. It technically is closed. The findings of the report revealed there to be no collusion between Trump and Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign.

What Democrats have latched onto is the hopes that an obstruction case can be made against the president. This is difficult since Mueller made no recommendation either way on obstruction and Attorney General William Barr has testified that the Mueller report contains no solid evidence of obstruction — not to mention the fact that if the president were charged with obstruction of justice, it would be for obstructing an investigation into a crime that was never committed.

Pelosi still believes an obstruction case can be made. She even took to Twitter on Tuesday to try and convince Americans that the Mueller report contains more than it actually does.

“McConnell’s declaration of ‘case closed’ is a stunning act of political cynicism and a brazen violation of the oath we all take,” she tweeted. “The Special Counsel report laid out eleven instances of the President’s obstruction, and left a raft of unanswered questions about coordination between the President’s campaign and Russia. These are not trivial or political questions – they go to the wellspring of our democracy.”

She then added, “On every issue that matters in people’s lives, the Administration and a complicit Republican Senate are waging an unprecedented, unwarranted, unconstitutional and utterly dangerous campaign of stonewalling.”

McConnell’s words on the Senate floor were also targeted by fellow senators on Tuesday.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) took to the floor to spread conspiracy theories about Republicans covering for the president.

“What we have here is a concerted effort to circle the wagons, to protect the president from accountability, to whitewash his reprehensible conduct by simply declaring it irrelevant,” said Schumer.
